Exciting battle - SH4 Story

So I thought I'd return to Silent Hunter now that the 1.3 patch is released and in order to get my skills up to spec, I ran all the training missions again. In the convoy attack training I managed to damage 4 merchants up to the point that they were half submerged and trodding along at half a knot or so. Running low on torps, I turned my stern towards a juicy tanker and lined up my shot. Suddenly, I heard some distant pinging and thought that a destroyer was close by.

Swinging my scope around, my blood froze. A destroyer was coming straight for me, ahead flank and pinging crazy. He probably spotted my scope, because I was all stop and running silent. Crash dive!

I didn't have a chance. He ran over me, the sound of his props ringing in my ears and then....BOOOM! BOOM!! BOOOM!!! The boat was rocking all over the place, my crew shouting out damage reports. "We have flooding sir!" Quickly checking the damage chart. Goddamn! Bulkheads have given away in the engine room and aft torpedo room, both the prop shafts are shafted (pun intended). I quickly manage to put together a makeshift repaircrew from the jobless watchcrew and they get working.

Then...a slight shift in the gravity...the stern is sinking! Flooding is out of control, so I move all non-repair crew out of there and shout at the repair crew to get that flooding under control. 160 ft...170 ft....180....190.... we're sinking!

I order all ahead flank since the sub is standing like a tree in the water and finally! 190....185....180... slowly but surely, we're going up! Flooding in the engine room is under control. Aft torp room still filling with water. 190....200... DAMMIT!

At 330 ft I order emergency blow. Doesn't seem to help much....350 ft. Looks like I'm going to see old Hob...Wait! 340....330....YES! After reaching the surface, all that can be seen is my bow sticking out of the water. FLooding in the aft torpedo room is finally under control and we're safe...for now.

What an awesome game that was! I was caught in front of my computer for 4 hours straight fighting that battle against the flooding, all the while I was watching Das Boot :D I love this game!

It's moments like this that make all it's flaws melt away, nice story!!!

Judging by that last pic I'm assuming the destroyer finished you off?

Cool story. I never really think about how much flooding actually affects the sub. Usually I either sink and die or get it under control and go up normal. Never really got all vertical like that. Woulda been awesome if the men in your control room were hanging on to stuff and falling down the other side of the room lol.

It all ended with me making a fatal mistake. The destroyers were mostly circling around for a long time while I got the flooding pumped out. Then one of them hit me right on, landed a depthcharge right on top of the conning tower, blowing everyone to death inside, killing the bulkheads, radar and periscope, also causing critical flooding the conn tower and command room.

The flooding in the conn tower were uncontrollable and it filled up really quickly. I managed to stave it off in the control room, but to no avail. We were going down. At 380 feet I tried a blow again, and I came up for some moments, but in the end it wasn't enough. I sank to 860 ft and imploded. :(

Well, you tried.;)

Reminds me of the time that goddamn merchant rammed my damn bow! The schiessecoff killed half my torpedo crew and caused extremely bad flooding...:rotfl:

Sounds like the white knuckle patrol:o The game grows on you if let it.

Am I imagining this, or since the patch have the Japanese suddenly become more accurate? I mean the few patrols I've had the coast guns, aircraft, and ship fire are almost 100% accurate and always seem to cause heavy damage. I thought most of this fire was not always so deadly? Just wondering?

Lt. Staumeier 07-16-07 12:06 AM

You're not imagening. All the japanese (and allied) gunners have become far more accurate, even on the first few shots, even though these are seldomly spot on. There is no longer any hope to take down a DD with your deck gun in a gunnery fight, you WILL loose, just as it's meant to be.

Regarding depth-charges I think they're just a little bit better, but I've also been better at keeping myself from being detected so I haven't seen much depth charging lately. Although what I've seen have been quite exciting.

you d@mm lucky to get outta there alive:o .

what you should do, is, next time in port, take on as many for a damage control party as possible. atleast one each for each specialization, torps; engines etc..., and the rest without. that way you're not shifting your crew around from where they're needed most

That's pretty unrealistic. The fact that theres no limit to the amount of people you can bring on board is to blame.

What I was getting at was, first, why when the Japanese start firing, whether it be gun, charges, etc, do you immediately take severe damage, usually hull damage. Secondly, from what I've understood the Japanese, especially earlier in the war, were not all that accurate with their fire and were not that skilled in sub detection and depth charging. Not wanting to flame anyhting as I enjoy the game immensely, just wondering why the deadly accuracy. For game play purposes?

wow

good story .I have ordered silent hunter 4 last wednesday but on sh3 i surfaced my uboat and found i'd hit the hull of a c3 cargo ship and i had ordered a blow balast and i had destroyed my bridge.

Nice read. Does make it hard to remember that it is only a sim from time to time.

Never experienced that dead on accuracy actually, so I can't tell. Usually it takes them a few shots to train in before they start hitting home. Sometimes they do get lucky though. Also depends A LOT on distance. Anything below 2000 yards and you're dead meat.

TheSatyr 07-16-07 11:47 PM

Two things. Because the Japanese were well aware that their DD force would be heavily outnumbered, they trained incessently before the war in gunnery with the attitude that they HAD to hit first and hit hard.

The second thing is that the Japanese had some of the best binocs of the war, especially when it came to night vision. Until the allies developed a stable version of ship mounted radar, the Japanese generally sighted allied surface units before the allies sighted them.
