bernard manning
just watched his pre recorded epitaph and it was quite amusing in parts.

It's like that episode of Sienfeld where the dentist who is already Catholic decides to become Jewish, and Jerry thinks he can do it just so he can tell the jokes with impunity. Jerry goes to the man's Priest, and complains. The Priest says, "And this bothers you as a Jewish person." Jerry replies, "No, it bothers me as a comedian". :D

he was loved by everyone bar the PC brigade i went to a show of his full of muslims welsh irish scottish and americans the PC brigade could never understand it

The moment the PC brigade win the argument to stop people being the butt of jokes, there will no longer be any humour possible. And at that point, I will be leaving the planet.
Bernard Manning might not have been to everybody's taste, but he simply did not feel constrained by any limits on what he was prepared to joke about. He was very funny and clever. The best one I ever heard about Bernard Manning, was when he was doing a show at a very 'Northern Town', with the audience full of a lot of genuinely racist people, and he made a joke about the Falklands War at the expense of the Argentinians, which naturally went down well with many in the audience. Then he added 'But seriously, there are a couple of lads in the audience with us tonight who are genuine veterans of the Falklands War, so I'd like you to give them a big hand'. At which point many started enthusiastically applauding. Moments later Bernard added: 'Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you Jose and Pedro.' Whereupon all the bigots in the audience realised that Manning was totally taking the p*ss out of their racist attitudes. Bernard Manning was very clever like that, and pulling something like that off live requires an intimate knowledge of the audience and perfect comedy timing. It's like that joke he made about his grandfather dying at Auschwitz, which he would occasionally stun audiences with, only to add that it was when he fell off a machine gun tower and broke his neck. Regardless of whether you think it was in poor taste, in terms of comic construction and timing, it was very clever. His comedy style was not my cup of tea personally, but I can appreciate his wit and ability to come up with some great jokes. :D Chock |
I am yet to hear of a "bad" man.
No one ever does anything because it is bad. People only ever do things to fulfil their wants or avoid the things they don't want. People do bad things when their wants are selfish or when they are misguided/unwise, but no person does something because they want to be bad. Further more I believe that a selfish attitude is a product, not of being 'bad' but of being unwise/misguided. I do not mind people who offend other people, but Mr Manning said things that hurt other people. I can see no way that he could have done this in a selfless and wise way. I conclude that Mr Manning was therefore not bad, but was misguided and unwise as we all are at sometime or another. I suspect he suffered his share of inner demons as a result and that's a shame for anyone. :( |

I'm with lesrae somewhat. I never found him funny, more boorish and blunt.
I wouldn't describe myself as part of "the PC brigade", but I don't see anything wrong with being conscious of the words we use. |
A lot of these things I have read about Manning, are the same things folks are saying about Dave Chapelle in the United States.

Really? I must be broken, Chappelle's brilliant :)

Kinda freaked me out, esp. after reading about how France dealt with their "Jewish" problems in WW2. Troubles me to this day. |
The guy was a comedian whose job it was to make a lot of people smile. In that, he certainly succeeded :yep:
