Bow Shot
I wasn't able to find a particular thread that dealt with this issue.
I have always used G7a torpedoes. When I have a destroyer coming at me, I wait until it is head on and I let go my G7a fast for a bow shot and I always sink it. I set the G7a to magnetic and .5m beneath keel depth of the destroyer. Now, since the G7e has only 1 speed (30 kts) whereas in a fast shot with a G7a runs at 44 kts, is the G7e capable of doing a bow shot like I have been doing with the G7a? Rob |
Yes, it is possible, but do not rely on it 100% due to the slow speed of the torp.
If the destroyer is moving towards you in a straight line, you can nail him anyway. The problem is that you have more chance to miss if the destroyer suddenly changes its course. ;) CapZap |
Ive not tried bow shot with the G7e, I always us G7a due to the speed selection.
It might be possible, if the destroyer changes course to port or starb'd - then fire your eel, you might have a better chance of hitting. Of course this is purely theoretical - ot might not work, so next chance I get I'll try this and let you know. |

I don't know if it is obvious to everyone here, but ... DON'T CHANGE YOUR COURSE ... after you have fired your eel!!! The destroyer will notice it and alter his course, too. You should only go deep as fast as you can. I always run with max speed at a DD. Then after sending my eel I try to go down to 100m and wait for the impact. If there's no BOOOOM at the given time I quickly change course to 90° port or starboard. |

I thought, by reading... When I have a destroyer coming at me, ... ... from your first post, that the DD already had detected you and was heading right towards your position. So my post was written for that special situation. If he has detected you, then you can run flank at him. I don't always run flank at DDs, only when they've detected me AND I see a good chance of sinking them. Hope this clears things up. :D |

What does this accomplish? I know it would close the distance between us, but it would take me out of the position I was in for attacking the convoy. Why not let it come to me as I might be able to sink another ship before it gets to me. Lately, I have not been able to attack a convoy without taking out the lead escort because I sink a ship, it comes speeding toward me. And there are usually 2 or 3 Flowers which are a damned nusence and I have to go quietly away, very deep trying to avoid DCs. |

They help you clear the way and after that you will have a juicy, defenceless convoy for yourself. ;) :arrgh!: CapZap |
Hi CapZap
I have an IXB in the late 40's. I have my patrols up to this point with all G7a because sometimes a different type, say G7e is not in my tubes. So, I was thinking of loading all G7e for the next mission. Do you usually have all acoustic eels on your sub? |

What I do is to have 1 of every 4 torps accoustic for the bow torp compartment and to be used only against destroyers. As for the aft, I have half of them accoustic. That way, every time i empty the bow tubes, I will have another accoustic eel loaded for the next salvo. But in order to have this workin the way it should, I disable the auto loading and do it manually, or else you might end up with your 4 bow tubes loaded with accoustic or no acocustics at all when you need one more than ever. At first it seems complicated, but with some practice it becomes second nature. CapZap |

For convoys, I usually don't attack any escorts. I let the so called Feger (lead escort) pass by and wait until it's ~2000 -3000m away from me. Then I pick my targets and attack. With that distance to the next escort you usually have enough time for your attack run and escape. Quote:
I don't know the exact date when they become available, my career doesn't seem to last long enough to get them. Or I missed them somehow. But if I could get them, I would put them to the stern (all three slots). Bow tubes: G7e (all slots) Stern tube: Zaunkönig, etc. With steam torpedoes you'll give away your position too early, that may be the reason why the escorts always run for you after you hit the first merchant. Stealth is always your friend!!! |
long time ago since i used a torpedo :nope:
but when i find a convoy in bad weather (and the DG crew refuses) i go to PD and would use my torpedo's  Mohr |
How about hiding or running away from escorts
 |
