Russia plays polar chess

It's already the biggest country, but...

That could become interesting.

I'm hoping that they find a UFO buried there, with a shape-shifting alien frozen in the ice, which thaws out and then... Oh wait, didn't they make a movie about that?:rotfl:

:D Chock

I wonder if they're considering a simple 'twinning' arrangement with Siberia?

I think it's a pretty serious issue myself. Claiming a chunk of real-estate the size of France, Germany and Italy combined for probable mineral exploitation is no joke.

I wouldn't put it past Vlad to try something like this. Not sure what the follow through will be. Russia really seems to be throwing its elbows around a bit more of late.

This news may sound funny, but theis is indeed serious business. This could leed to a whole list of terreble things....

It seems very antagonistic in light of the british spy scandal and missle defense system situation. :o

Well, from the Russian perspective, the above things are very antagonistic on the part of the West towards them.

I wonder if Canada can also claim?? Maybe even the U.S. as there is Alaska, and they will plonk a base anywhere despite what others may think (Remember Antartica!)

"Canada could make exactly the same claim. The Canadians could say that the Lomonosov ridge is part of the Canadian shelf, which means Russia should in fact belong to Canada, together with the whole of Eurasia."

It's more of a case of what are they going to do about it.
