GWX AI has Eagle Eyes!!

Ok September 9, 1939 come across a HUGE convoy sailing west at 9Knts in sector BE61. The southernmost escort is just visible to me check the UZO and it give me a range of around 11.5 KM's its a hazy day around 10am so turn west and order flank to get ahead of the convoy next thing I see is splashes  WTF that escort SAW ME and is now charging hard, he had to have saw me because i didnt think they had radar in 1939 let alone flower class corvettes

Am I incorrect about the radar? or does GWX have eagle eyed escorts?

Tell me about it.

I was at 20 meters (no sign of my sub above water periscope was fully down) on my first patrol in 1939 on my new Career.

I got a merchant contact moveing slow, Moved to intercept then came up to periscope depth to launch my attack.....when I raised my scope the merchant was already in THE MIDDLE OF EVASIVE ACTION :damn:

I never figured out how he detected me.

Whether was Calm by the way so my con tower wasent sticking up.

Your bosun's been doing some drum practice on the pressure hull. That's how they found you.

Reece 06-26-07 11:55 PM

Whilst moving your periscope leaves a wake, what I do is move within a few kilometers go silent, stop, wait a half minute, raise scope just out of water, get relative information, mark down details then lower scope to consider my options, I always try to make a 90 degree approach ahead of the convoy!:yep:

No but if you check the manual they did have long range scopes used specifically for spotting U-Boats. In fact, the ships the U-Boats hunted, had better spotting capabilities, in day time, than the U-boat did, so it would seem.

At night however, its a different story... if it were me, Id have stayed under all day, following their general route on the map. Then at night, I'd have been up to the surface and at least 2 ships would be going to the bottom. That's how ya do it.

:hmm: :rotfl:

Now lets back to the topic

It depends on what mod you use - my recomendation is a 16 kilometer visibiliti mod, your watch crew will detect ships and air threats more effective and realistic eather.
In some situation especially when you have a lite or medium fog - you need to be carefulle and check visuall contact for your self, especially when you run the game in time compression
(P.S. My personal recomendation is to not run compresion higher that 128)
And offcorse - make shure you have two WE officers on board - also very important ;)

Long time lurker first time poster...

What's the name of the 16KM visibility mod? I'm always getting jumped on by destroyers...I've only gone on three patrols with GWX however.

SmokinTep 06-27-07 05:42 AM

It's part of GWX. I use it and don't seem to have the problem of being detected early.

In the past i have downloaded a file (i am at work and don`t know the
name now) from a forum. That were the sensors altered into more realistic.

It stays dangerous to near convoys etc but now i can live with it.

I think sometimes that the gwx developer have looked the movi Das Boot
too much.

But GWX is a great mod but i use some other sensors.

Normally I would agree with you but ....I was surfaced

TwistedFemur 06-27-07 06:26 AM

After reading all your posts I will install the 16km mod :ping:

Also since you were going ahead flank you would have been splashing a bit too which would help them spot you.
