Pen's SH3 Rant on 'nicknames'

Right, this has been sticking in my craw for some time now and I am going to release, so I really really hope people are paying attention to me, cause I am a busy person these days, so, please don't make me repeat myself or else...

torpedo...

sideways...

sun doesn't... and...

shine.

cheers!:rotfl::rotfl:

Right, onto the matters at hand, this business, of calling Unmodded Silent Hunter III "Vanilla" its complete and utter craziness, its rubbish for want of a better term.

Why? Because vanilla, proper vanilla flavourings are some of the most expensive flavourings you can buy! Have any of you ever tried making your own vanilla ice cream? I have and believe me it grieves me when I hear people refer to vanilla as being "plain!" Philistines!! They just don't get it, or appreciate what vanilla truly is.

I presume, that you call unmodded Silent Hunter III "Vanilla" because it is "Plain" well, it is plain, but its NOT vanilla. *deep breath*

Vanilla IS a flavouring. And a very expensive one at that, especially if you get the decent stuff.

Right, while we are on the subject calling Silent Hunter III "stock" now I am guilty of this myself.:-?:D

Stock again is a very flavour and diverse packed thing.

Let it not be said that I don't offer direction for my preachings... what should we call Silent Hunter III, we should call it "base" Silent Hunter III.

Why?

Because its like a Pizza, Silent Hunter III in the box is our base on which to put our topings, the various supermods. Like GWX, Uberboat, WAC and so forth. And if you don't want to put a supermod, there are lots of individual mods that adjust silent hunter III game behaviour like... ok I can't think of any, cause all I uses is GWX for my serious career and Uberboat for when I want a right good laugh and to blast things to bits for a bit of pure shoot em up fun to unwind.

So there we are, SH3 shall henceforth in its unmodded state be referred to as "BASE" if you please.

Silent Hunter III is like Pizza not Ice Cream!

*takes another deep breath and tries to stop eye twitching sporadically.*:damn::damn:

------------------------------------------------------

Hope nobody is offended Im just having a laugh.:rotfl:

But I do think "base" is a better terminology for unmodded SH3 than "vanilla" or "stock":D

Please don't hurt me, but I have no problem with calling unmodified SHIII 'stock'.

One of the definitions of the word 'stock' is just that: Unmodified.

10.the person from whom a given line of descent is derived; the original progenitor.

43.of the common or ordinary type; in common use: a stock argument.

44.banal; commonplace: a stock remark.

The raw material out of which something is made.

3. regularly and widely used or sold; "a standard size"; "a stock item"

As for the use of 'Vanilla', I point you to the 'New Hackers Dictionary':
http://www.ccil.org/jargon/jargon_37.html#SEC44
vanilla /adj./
[from the default flavor of ice cream in the U.S.] Ordinary flavor, standard. When used of food, very often does not mean that the food is flavored with vanilla extract! For example, `vanilla wonton soup' means ordinary wonton soup, as opposed to hot-and-sour wonton soup. Applied to hardware and software, as in "Vanilla Version 7 Unix can't run on a vanilla 11/34." Also used to orthogonalize chip nomenclature; for instance, a 74V00 means what TI calls a 7400, as distinct from a 74LS00, etc. This word differs from canonical in that the latter means `default', whereas vanilla simply means `ordinary'. For example, when hackers go on a great-wall, hot-and-sour soup is the canonical soup to get (because that is what most of them usually order) even though it isn't the vanilla (wonton) soup.

In the sense it is used to describe unmodified SHIII, the term 'vanilla' is perfectly appropriate, given the intended audience (ie., mostly geeky males, present company excepted).

No it isn't.

Because it is a common misconception that the term 'Vanilla' means plain, or ordinary etc etc hence that entry there... sorry sir, I stick to my guns on this one...

The stock one, ok, you can have that. But I am the Vanilla Warrior now... and I will rigorously smite anybody who dareth to call unmodded SH3 'vanilla' henceforth.

Under slang yes, vanilla and the word plain are mixed together quite frequently and its wrong, because vanilla is not plain, semalina, that is plain, vanilla is not plain. If you want to speak in slangs, feel free. SH3 is like Pizza and I am digging my heels in on that now.:arrgh!:

XLjedi 06-26-07 03:14 PM

Instead of vanilla may I suggest the "Robert Matthew Van Winkle SH3 Installation"

KeybdFlyer 06-26-07 03:14 PM

One double Vanilla for the boy and a bowl of soup made with your stock for me, please.

I've never burnt the roof of my mouth on SHIII. Nor is it circular. In fact, the only thing that even slightly resembles pizza is the CD on which it is stored.

Also, the lactose intolerant among us can freely enjoy SHIII.

I can't get SHIII delivered to my door in 30 minutes or less, piping hot.

Oh, and I paid roughly twice what I would normally pay for a pizza (~$10) for SHIII ($19.99).

Pizza and beer go well together. SHIII and beer result in me visiting the place where one of the Monkees stores his gym shorts.
