Oh come on! This is BS!
Okay. I'm in U-107 a Type IXB taking part in operation Drumbeat right now. I'm off Long Island right now. I've found a good route that merchants take in and out of New York Harbor. I'm playing with GWX.
Dept under my keel at periscope depth is 7 meters. Lovely. I love the American supertechnology that allows them to see my boat. I did not know thta patrol ships had a friggin' AEGIS radar to spot periscopes in horrible weather. GEESE!!! I've been rammed by this lunatic in his patrol boat TWICE now! I break his keel and he goes down like a sack of hammers. In the process the ******* always destroys my conning tower. Do others have this problem? This is not as realistic as it seems. If you've read the book Operation Drumbeat you'll know that American Navy efforts to stop Donitz operations were completely inept. These patrol ships are friggin' WAITING for me! It's like trying to walk into Saigon in 1972!!!!!!!!!!! BS! |
You say "horrible weather". How horrible? If it's heavy, foggy and raining then I agree: they shouldn't be spotting you.
|
visibility 100 meters
If I can't surface after the sun goes down then I'm dead. |
Then they shouldn't see you outside of that. I don't know what the problem is, but don't worry, somebody will be along with an answer.
|
I surfaced for 5 minutes just to test. Sure enough, the same ******* changed his course, rammed the crap out of me and turned himself into an Al Queda weannie roast!
WTF?!!! |

Yep the americans were not on to it if i can say that in the first few months of Drumbeat. Later on tho they delt to it, caue they changed to convoys and more escorts instead of lone ships sailing happily by sometimes with lights on. It was an IX commanders heaven. |
NOT FOR ME! This sucks!!!!!
|
Reminds me of this one time where I waited till a lone merchant sound contact was 80 degrees of my bow then I came to periscope depth.....
Raised the Periscope and he was in the middle of evasive action. :damn: Ill never ever figure out what happened or how I got detected. |
Only thing I can think of is that SOMEHOW they are able to see occasionally my radio antenna out of the water but in REALITY this is pure crap.
|
Have you accounted for the positive boyance your boat is subject to if you travel at low speed? If you are stopped you'll be 3 meters abouve what you'd normaly (under stock that is) expect. Could be a factor.

I was just off Ireland in a storm, nightime, waiting at 14 metres, set for silent running and a dd with some kind of esp made a beeline for me and sank me with the first drop of ashcans:damn: , I was not a happy bunny...just as you can be in the right place at the right time , you can be in the wrong place at the wrong time...well that is what I keep telling myself. Another time I spent ages getting out of the kiel kanal, then the RAF turned up and added some extra vetilation to my new uboat.
Good luck on your next patrol |
Part of the problem is the crew efficiency
I never got as far as the US in looking at stock ratings I have removed 99% of the stock scripted patrols around the UK and US Stock SCR below - the ships become " alive " when you reach within 50 km of them http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h2...ooly/Stock.jpg GWX 1.04 below http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h2...wooly/1.04.jpg Patrols are random now and contain a realistic crew rating A quick look at stock SCR tells me the ships off the NY coast in 41\early 42 have a rating of veteran :o |

I'd say maybe the only real complaint when comparing to the drumbeat book would be that the US had like maybe 2 destroyers looking for subs on the East coast... and I seem to run into em on every patrol. |
Oops forgot this pic
The highlighted circles are areas of patrol with a possibily that the ship may be anywhere within that circle before moving onto the next one http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h2...oly/random.jpg |

Also as I understand it from my own experiences, it seems the enemy AI is constantly alert. In GWX the ASW effort is a lot better than in base game. So, these combined, comes with the territory.:yep: |
