forward of the beam

hi

I'm reading commanders handbook now and I'm a little confused about "forward of the beam" term. It's wrote:

"the night surface attack by the submarine should be launched, whenever possible, from a position forward of the beam, of 60° to 90°."

or

"try later to reach a position ahead of the beam, traveling at top speed on the confines of the enemy's range of sight, in order to be able to carry out the attack proper from the forward position."

Is it mean that I should place my boat here:

the target ship or convoys beam would be 90 degrees parallel to their
course off the "shoulders of the target" if you will. forward of
the starboard beam means ahead of the target on its track
but of to the side such as when the target sails into range
you are within the arc of shooting postition

Seemingly the reverse position from the diagram ahead not behind the convoy/Ship

'Beam' nautically is across a ship amidships--you should be attacking from along the target's projected course, close to perpendicular. In simpler terms, try for an AOB of 60-90 degrees.

You got it!

When submerged you need to make it closer . Position yourself not much further than the one or eleven o'clock position in relation to the target or convoy and you will end up approaching from two or ten o'clock relative to the lead escort.

Happy hunting
