Corvettes...
I'm on patrol early 1941 and twice having attacked convoys and then gone deep I am always caught by some blasted corvette! Even if it is stormy weather and choppy seas and I'm at 180m silent running they spot me no bother.
But the most annoying is that they constantly sit above me for hours if not days. I crept from north of the Azores to the coast of Spain with one of the buggers after breaking from the convoy to sit on me. Even with time compression of 8 it took hours of realtime. Finally forced to surface due to filty air and a low battery the bugger blew me out of the water. Is this a bug in that the corvettes are so deadly? I have attacked convoys and have sunk frigates/destroyers and also evaded them but never the corvettes who can spot me in the darkest night, with the slimest profile at low speed... Your thoughts...:o |
My normal comment is you are doinfgsomething to attract escorts, but: Only corvettes?
What version or mods are you using? Strange that only corvettes love you. what speed are you using for silent running? Over one knot it's too noisy. |
Does it really matter when under silent running whether you go at slow (~100RPM) or set the speed manually to 1kn (~50RPM) ?
Or is this just something we all play fore realism's sake ? I asked myself this question from time to time yet when I was in such a situation ;) To the topic: I never experienced covettes being this annoying/dangerous. When attacking a convoy with more than 2 escorts, e.g. one of them was a destroyer and the rest flower corvettes, I didn't recognize any difference in their behaviour. When I was chased by some escort for several hours, that was a destroyer. The corvettes had gone back to the convoy long before he left. For modifying gameplay, I only use GWX 1.03. |

Once I found out, I now routinely manually set revolutions for 1 knot when silent running. I have had much better luck escaping escorts since then. I do the "wiggle waggle" that has been described. Flank speed to escape maximum depth, cut power to revolutions for 1 knot, alter course 20 degrees and drift. |
Perhaps that depends on the date too. That the destroyer's hydrophones are more advanced in the later periods. It might be effect of higher crew experience then too.

Be sure not to pass 100 RPM, then you will be not on the corvette's hydrophones. |
Corvettes
Thanks folks - I'll follow those tips
