Well it finally happened ...

Capt'n Snuffy was having a stellar career!

He was bringing his crew and his boat home regularly and was at the top of the Aces chart in the home port office.

One mission ago he came back from a patrol around the north Phillipines/Luzon Island area and was offered a "new" sub, a Balo class. To his surprize, instead of being relocated to Pearl for the new boat, command left him in Perth/Freemantle. He crewed up the boat, (most of the guys from his previous boat) and headed out for another trip north of Luzon.

Things went well ... total tonage on the mission was well over 84k and was approaching 90k. He radioed in several sightings of convoys and task forces while returning to port, after completing successfully the two tasks he was given by command on this patrol.

He finally pulls into port to find out that the Navy now considers his new boat to be be obsolete after giving it to him one patrol ago. So the Navy in their infinant (infant?) wisdom opt to retire Capt'n Snuffy as well as his boat.

I started the career as early as I could, spent the whole of the career in the Phillipines area, and at last inspection of the Aces board, had over 600k in destroyed enemy assets. It was mid 43 when he was nailed for retirement.

Oh well.

Its a known bug if you accept the command of a boat before it was historically available you get an early retirement.

One way to avoid it is to ... well ... dont go home. Go to a tender instead, refit, and radio in a patrol report. You will be given new mission(s).

I'm pretty sure there is a mod to stop this happening.

Otherwise wait for 1.3. It's a known bug.

CAREERS

This happened to me about 2 weeks ago. Just start another mission in same year.
Balo class.

Thanks Chris. It was late and well we all know the story.

BTW ... this isn't a rant. I had been waiting for this to happen and was quite surprized it took as long as it did.

I don't know about starting a new career at this time. I know I haven't seen all the possible senarios there are in this sim ... but this retirement thing has set me back. As was mentioned ... starting a new career now involves training a new crew again.

Although I'll have to check where I saved last, perhaps I can avoid going back home as was mentioned.

Historically speaking this is pretty much what happened in real life.

RGR that ... and knew it ... personally not sure when the Balo came out, obviously after my date in 43 eh.

Okay saved game was outside of the tenders so I started the saved game and went in to refit. Radioing in a report did nothing for me, and when I select the anchor icon in the upper right corner of the screen, "End Patrol" is not a selectable option. I only get refit and Postpone as selectable.

So now I'm stuck with a refitted boat ... full of fuel, torpedos, and ammunitions for the guns ... and I have no mission.
Guess I'll just go out and see what crosses my path and take em out then try to return to port.
