The unloved knight
First this:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/6756149.stm And as sure as the sun going down at the end of the day, the reaction, exactly as forseen: contempt! Insult! "How dare you to disrespect our wonderful sentence!" http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/6760927.stm All we should have to say to them is "WDYJFO?" |
Rushdie's (what's in a name? ) had some close shaves. One more wouldn't hurt. :D
UPDATE: Reciprocity: The Unloved Queen. |

IIRC the Fatwa was something like "shoot on sight" or "kill him wherever you find him", meaning any muslim was asked to kill Rushdie even in UK territory :hmm: Aside from any other consideration (Moral, religious...), that's pure and simply an intromision in International Laws system, as one state is incitating to kill against the laws enforced in the territory of another. More or less something similar as if the UK government asked any british residents in Iran to burn books of Quran :dead: |
Rushdie and Queenie, move over. I think this might be the next big thing. :shifty:
Those Danes! What a riot! |

Henryk Broder, I mentioned him in earlier threads, has been awarded a publication or journalism award for his stand against Islam just days ago. While Muhammedans are deepoly offended as usual, many reasonable and tolerant Germans voiced their concerns about this incompetent decison and the risks of provocing a most peaceful religion to turn violant, and the hindering this lack of tolerance means for the integration of those who have refused to integrate since three generations.
This is what the man had to say in his speech - sometimes humorous, sometimes biting, always to the point, as always! http://www.spiegel.de/kultur/gesells...490497,00.html |

I think Islamic cultures that go crazy over these events are completely irrational, but us doing the same thing back is hardly the answer. If you have a Lion in your house you don't poke him in the eye and taunt him. Theres the act of not being apologists and then theres unnecessesary provocation. |

We will win anyway so whats the big deal. |
Provocation? That inlcudes a sufficiently great ammount of insult, and intention.
The British have every right there is to act as British, in the british nation, on the rbitish isles, in the european realm and the Christian occident, according to british laws, rules, habits and traditions. and if somebody is insulted by that, because of a hysteric row of ver a book that back then almost none of the hysterics has reed himself, so that he knows what he was yelling about, then thios does not mean the the feeling of being insulted is justified and the provocation fulfilles the above condtions: it could also mean that the offended is a hyper-sensitive narcissistic neurotic person who has no balance and no reason. that is one of the problems with the mindset that Islam is teaching and causing: on the one hand it says that one is peaceful as long as not being attacked, on the other hand the threshold level beyond which tolerance turns into hysteria and aggression is so ridiculously low that every move of the small finger, every syllable, ever blink with your eyelid already makes it yell: "I'm under attack, this gesture, this syllable, this blinking, is done in a way that Muhammad has not taught! Offense! Shame! Revenge! How dare you to attack us so intolerantly!" What is next, Broder asks? Forbidding pork meat in europe? no more school foir gilrs? No lessons in sport and swimming? what must we not do anymore to make islam stop feeling insulted? Quote:
each day we get called to have understanding for all possible fundamentalisms and fanatisms, and to practice tolerance, to adduce prior concessions, and to never expect aqny services in return. A german nobel prize winner just suggested to chnage a chruch into a mosque, as a gesture of showing goodwill towards Muslims. but until now we wait in vain for the suggestion of a Muslim cleric to chnage a mosque into a church in return, and that idea easily could cost him his life anyway. Like it almost costed an Afghan Muslim his life to convert to christian relgiion. He escaped death penalty only by being diagnosed to be insane, after Merkel and kofi Annan intervened in his favour. Tolerance is written on the poster behind which comfort, laziness and cowardice are hiding. tolerance is the cheap alternative to walking upright with one's head held high, that although being preached is only seldomly practiced. Whoever wants to defend the values of the enlightenement, must be intolerant today, and must draw red lines and insist on these lines not being stepped over. He may not excuse honour murderings and other trivial matters with the cultural background of the perpetrators, and he may not degrade the terror by virtues of religious fanatics, who hang 16 year old for "unchaste living", to a private issue of a foreign juristical culture that is to be respected because meanwhile it is considered to be bad manners to say out that not all cultures are the same, and are not of equal quality. Who confesses to selective tolerance will tace care not to fall into the trap of "equi-distance" und relativism. Meanwhile you can collect points on every Tupperware-party by claiming that George Bush and Osama Bin Laden are made of the same stuff, the number of people getting killed in terror attacks are lower bthan the number of people getting killed in public traffic, and the chistian crusaders shed more blood than the Islamic terrorists today. That way, you can sneak out of reality, but you still can't escape it. I wouldn't be surprised if next time a self-supporting group of cannibals would demand their recognition as a valid alternative to vegetarian life, becasue both are characterized by a certain one-sidedness. short while ago, a Berlin court ruled in favour of a group that is campaigning for an anti-war-demonstration. the president of the police had forbidden to show flags and symbols of Hezbollah. Protesters felt being forbidden to practice their basic rights, and called the court. The court said hezbollah were a war party in a conflict in which one could support either the one or the other side. and thus, the children and grandchildren of the Jewslaughterers of the past will demonstrate under the banner of the Jewslaughterers of the future for a just Endlösung of the Middle East question. If I am bored during the week, I may be tempted to translate the whole speech. It sinks so very damn many arrows into the bullseye, like he already did in his book. |

What is the minimum you have usually have to do in England to qualify for a knighthood? I know Jagger and Ringo both have one.
It doesn't seem that Rushdie has a huge body of work as a novelist? I hope it is a derserving honor, and not just given out because of the current political climate. I think Pasternak with "Dr. Zhivago" is totally undeserving of the honors won, and benefited greatly from when it was released. I agree with Nabokov when he said something like it was the worst book ever written in any language. |
