When I was a kid I watched the mini series on television (in Germany) and it was amazing! After a couple of years I also watched the director's cut on TV and I was pretty much disappointed. They mostly took out the action scenes from the mini series and made them into a movie. You will lose all that 'real uboat life' feeling that was portrayed in the mini series including the famous 'Gammelfahrt'.:D Also I heard that the movie is poorly translated into English, so, if you don't speak German you'll lose another bunch of atmosphere. The translation of movies is always poor IMHO, so I watch them in their original language (if I can ;) ). Happy hunting!:arrgh!: |
There is a mini series??? I never knew!

1. Das Boot (1981) - original cinema version, 149 min. 2. Das Boot mini series (1985) - first TV version, approx. 300 min. 3. Das Boot: Director' Cut (1997) - improved quality (sound, etc.), 208 min. 4. Das Boot mini series (2004) - TV version with improved quality, 282 min. I think only #3 and #4 are available on DVD nowadays. And I lost my #2 version somehow!:damn: :damn: :damn: So I bought the #4 DVD version and I'm quite happy now, though there are at least two scenes missing compared to the #2 version! :D So, go for the #4 version, it rocks!!!  |
Das Boot in english is just wrong. Accidentally selecting english soundtrack when watching a dvd was ... jarring.
I speak bits and pieces of german, which helps. But subtitles are good. I don't really understand the mindset that goes into dubbing movies. |

"Das Boot is probably the most over-rated sub movie ever made. The acting (if it can be called that) is juvenile, the production values look like they came out of someone's garage, and the writing is sophomoric at best. Quite a waste of good film stock and has no redeemable story value whatsoever."
. . . . . . Okay, seriously, how many of you guys had a heart attack when you read that? We hope you have enjoyed your little soujorn to "Incredibly Dumb and Insupportable Things to Say about Das Boot" World. We now return control of your Internet provider back to you. Me? I'm gonna go watch Das Boot because it effing ROCKS! :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl: |
I too watched Das Boot as a child on TV and loved it week after week. I was a bit disappointed when I recently got the "Directors Cut" as it was indeed cut. Cut to ribbons that is. I must try to find a copy of the original series, if that's possible.

Well, for many of us the movie is all we've ever seen. I have little doubt the miniseries is better (i'm looking for a copy now), but as a person who is critical of most war movies (with maybe 3 exceptions), the film version of Das Boot is terrific when viewed in its' own right. It ranks firmly in my top 5 war films of all time.

there are no hero, there are no "john wayne" there are no glamour and so on the movie showed us how life was on a german sub, during WWII markus |
I enjoy this movie. Very Good sound track. The funny english voices make me laugh my brains out. Still, I enjoy watching no matter what.
German words spoken and English subtitles to read...my usual preference but sometimes I do feel crazy about language settings.     Das Boot will always be my favorite movie. |
Have any of you read the book the movie was based on ('Das Boot' by Lothar Günther Buchheim)?
I don't know whether it was ever translated though.:hmm: You get pretty more details concerning 'real u-boat life' and some nice little stories about other german submarines, too. So, if you can, go for it!!! |
