I posted this in the video thread allready.
Basically S-Boats Frettchen and Gepard were being relived off Lebanon and were to do a formal simultanous goodbye crossing the wake of Frigate Brandenburg (hence the music).
Obviously, Gepard didnt get the "turn" signal and stayed put.

The 143 and 143A classes are wood on steel frame, as all german Lürssen build S-Boats except for the 148, which were French designed with steel hulls.
Men of steel in boats of wood...:D

The squadron commander was relieved two days ago, but it was not clear if that is a result of that collision.

Not been a good time lately for the German navy has it? What with this and the Lubeck shooting itself at Plymouth and then there's the minesweeper off Norway.

As Beatty put it: "There seems to be something wrong with our bloody ships today!" ;)

Interesting that the main media here in Germany did not cover the three events - at least not in a way that I took note of them (I knew of the Plymouth shooting only).

Germans better stay with U-boats, and tanks - that's where they excel. ;)

Australian patrol boats are fibreglass and aluminium:up: Wood doesn't stand up to what the ships go through up North, plus the termites (white ants) would eat throught them like no tomorrow!:huh:

Is the type 206 still usable?
I wish Germany would offer a cheap deal on those like with the Leopards, that deal went fast after the Germans contacted.

Yes. Of Germany's 206-fleet (18 or 20 boats), one third or more has been decomissioned, the others have been modified (Type 206A). Some more may end service too, since the Navy have now gotten the 212. don'T know what the foreign customers do or did with their boats.

I think the Skipper of Frettchen is to blame.
You hear "hard to port", then after a while "steady as she goes".
Captain and OOD apparently were on the starboard bridge wing and fixated on Brandenburg.
The Helmsman apparently was too afraid to use his own initiative.
Then they spot Gepard and he orders "hard to starboard".
Even with the current course they might have missed Gepard entirely, with hard to port again by a wide margin, aided by Brandenburg's wake.
But then again, it is not the first time S-Boats have collided and won't be the last.
Frettchen was repairable in Cyprus, while Gepard was transported home on a dock ship.
To replace those two S-Boats, somebody came up with the great idea of deploying two mine hunters (20 knots max) to Lebanon. Racy boats for sure, the Hezbollah will be scared ****less...
We do have a bunch of recently decomissioned 143s, so why didn't they just recomission one or two? At least they have enough to canibalize for the repair of Gepard.
The whole Lebanon mission is really just a summer cruise for idiot politicians and admirals. Did they sofar intercept a single arms shipment?
