You Sank My Battleship!

Woohoo! I sank the HMS Nelson, at 95% realism, in GWX. They didn't even get a sniff of me. I let loose 4 torps from about 2,500 yards, and two hit. I don't know where, because I was already headed for 150 meters, silent speed, but I almost immediately got a "She's going down!" message, and the Nelson showed up in the log. For the same reason, I didn't get any screenshots. A destroyer came after me, but never heard me. He just circled around from the general area I launched from.

No weapons officer assistance, just stabilized view.

And I have Hitman to thank for it, because I used his nifty KM wheel.

On edit: January 1940, west of the Channel.

I guess the British haven't figured out that battleships make lousy convoy escorts yet.

Ooooops!! , sorry Puster.
Didn't think about that.
Well, you can tell Frau Puster it's a boys party. And one more thing: Being on diet doesn't mean you can't take a look at the menu. ;)

One thing i love about GWX is that we finally see capital ships and not just merchants.

I'm in a similar position...November 25 1939, heading for BE83 in a IXB (ok, i cheated a bit and got it straight from SH3commander, since i got one through normal means on my pre-GWX insall).

I am neither playing DiD nor in full realism yet though. Map contact updates are on to help me plot my firing solutions. I also have the weapons officer enabled for those times when real life is pressing and i just have to get half an hour of gaming without too much hassle, plus external cameras for the eye candy. All in all, about 75-80% realism if i'm not mistaken.

So, i make a dash through the channel and by the time i exit i have 17k tons under my belt (or 14k, i'm not sure) by sinking a couple of coastal tankers and a large merchant (all french) with the deck gun, plus a french fishing boat with the 37mm...great gun, not for flak duties but for sinking small ships without expending torpedos or deck gun ammo.

I'm about a day away from the assigned grid when i get a convoy report moving E at 5 kts. Now, on my first patrol i got an Illustrious class carrier NW of Ireland (sunk with a 4 torp salvo, it only needed 3 though, the last was just already fired) and the area is generally high traffic, so i plot an intercept and head for it.

Upon my watch crew spotting them i see the damned convoy has changed course to NNE and speed to 6kts...my intercept course is less than optimal now, coming in at about 130 AoB doing 10-11kts. The sea is totally calm but the night is fairly dark and i've arrived at the intercept point between 22:00-23:00, so i have some time to work and maybe flank them again after the first attack for a second pass.

Closing to about 10km i also see a Nelson BB! I was not sure if it was the Nelson or the other one of the same class, so i had the WO identify it. Only two DDs so it's probably doable. Then the phone rang and i ended up goin out for some beers with friends

I might have to run parallel to them and flank them for an hour or so, just to get a better AoB on them. Problem is that i'm aprroaching from the south and the BB is on the north side, right behind the lead escort and with a load of merchants between me and the warships. I could flank them and cross their track to get on the other side, but then i will lose precious hours of darkness...all in all it's shaping up to be very interestin and i'm only on my 3rd patrol since installing GWX. I can't wait for later years and electronic goodies, GWX has enhanced gameplay tenfold for me

One nice thing about the Nelson class: They have a *VERY* deep draft. Almost 11 meters. So, if you set your eels to magnetic and a depth of 12.5 or 13 meters, they *SHOULD* pass under most of the other ships that might be in the way.

I had the same problem, with ships between me and HMS Nelson, so I set the torps to fast speed (G7a's), magnetic, and 13 meters depth. I did get one premature detonation (no 'torpedo treffer' message, and *WAY* before the others hit). I'm sure they ran under at least one escort, and possibly a tramp steamer or passenger/cargo. I was focused on the BB, so I can't be sure, and in any case I was headed for the cellar before the last tube closed.
