Flak Gunners in GWX
 

I just installed GWX a few weeks ago. I currently am in a viib. Cruising along am 53 and plane spotted. I am in Sept 39. I decide to have a flak gunner take care of the plane which now have turned into two. On their second pass ... flak gun destroyed , gunner dead, down to 90% hull integrity. Yikes!!
I have to tell ya the vanilla with 1.4 patch was pretty easy to shoot down planes, even more so this early in the war. I knew GWX was going to have rabid plane AI but geez. This is craziness. Question. How many of you put alot of stock in flak gunners in GWX? Should I just get one and concentrate on more torpedo petty officers. I think I may just crash dive any time I see a plane. Alot of you have been playing GWX Alot longer than I. What have you all done as far as enemy planes are concerned? I play D.I.D. at 76% difficulty. :doh:

Personnally, as long as I spot more than 2 planes, I order to dive. :lol:

What should you do? Do what any sensible U-Boat man would do.

I dive all the time,but thats because my AA men have entered into a suicide pact and whatever I do,whatever the boat,I've never been able to get them to fire at the planes in GWX.I've tried all the stupid routines,man the gun and fire a shot to show them how its done,go back to the bridge....nothing except winged death and damage,bloody SHIII bug:nope: the only time I've shot down a plane was when I manned the gun myself,and by luck rather than skill shot down a really slow anson.Not worth the bother 99% of the time;)

Dive every time....your boat is a 'bullet magnet' :arrgh!:

As othe people mentioned, it is very reasonable to order a crash dive as soon as the plane is spotted. In some areas it is recommendable to even have a finger ready on the C button while surfaced.
On the last patrol in the Indian ocean I decided not to take it any more. I wanted to fight back. Two catalinas I think. I manned one flak. The AI guy on the second flak did shoot but did not hit anything. And I thoght I must have landed few hits but no effect to be seen on the planes. In this battle I lost four crew members, all while servng the flak. And no success against the planes. I will not be fighting them any more I think :-?

Yep its starting to sound more and more like concentrate on other crew members. I did enjoy shooting down a plane here and there on the vanilla with 1.4 patch. Just too risky though. I like everything about gwx just NOT those planes. The plane.. the plane. The plane is here boss. A little (Fantasy Island) there for you people who can remember the 80's.

You must be playing a different version to most other folk then :hmm:

I don't mess with planes. I do not even qualify a gunner or flak gunner. Quals are better used for Damage Control, and extra Machinists and Torpedo men.

I don't even bother qualifying a guy as a flakker.
