Silent Hunter III, no dvd, no Starforce

I bought a reserve copy of SH III yesterday; just to make sure I would have a backup in case anything happened to my original dvd. The game came at a very reasonable price € 5,99.

When I saw that the vendor only put the dvd in the box I asked: 'aren't you forgetting something?'
'No way she said'.....
OK, that's strange...no manual, no map, no CODE......

When I got home I tried to get my new copy to work....but my constant tweaking of SH III had left my install so warped that it could not be unistalled in the normal way...

I couldn't reinstall the game either because of leftover in the registry, even after cleaning it.

So, a complete reinstall of XP was my best option.

After installing my brand new Silent Hunter 3 I find:

1) no Starforce
2) no need for the dvd to be in the drive
3) already patched to 1.4

Uh..... I would say this is more than likely a pirate copy. Where did you buy it?

ReM 05-26-07 02:35 AM

I bought it in a toys store...they belong to a chain that has shops here nationally...
it's called Intertoys. If it is a pirated dvd, I'm pretty sure that they didn't do it on purpose..

not that I needed the no-dvd patch by the way.....;)

I did find some slight differences in the color of the DVD..... and the finishing in the middle isn't the same either but it does look pretty official. But then again: that is what pirates try to do as well

Your take on it:

The one to the right has the code on the dvd....a piece of paper fell on it....

Budget releases of SH3 do ship already patched to 1.4b and contain the manual on the disc. It wouldn't surprise me that it doesn't contain Starforce seeing as though Ubisoft dropped it a while ago. And with no Starforce, it wouldn't then surprise me that the DVD would not be needed to run it.

Hi,
Is your copy by Intertoys in English? The web site is not. If it is in English could you see if they ship world wide?

The Australian cheap version still has Star Force. I purchased one a few weeks ago.

Cheers MarkL

Sounds okay to me......looks like all the extras have either been done away with or added to the disk. :hmm:

I will try to confirm with UBI, hopefully it is legitimate and we can thus have also a solution to the old LEGAL no-starforce no-DVD request.

The game is in English alright, I have a stock 1.4 and a GWX installment....both work exactly the same as my other out-of-the box SH without the need for patching or a dvd.....

You wouldn't know the difference....

I guess it is some kind of benelux/french release because the text on the box is in Dutch and French....while the original release come in a Dutch-only box..

I'm sure more of these will appear.....demand for SH III will be up because of the buzz generated by SHIV....and UBI will gladly put some more DVD's on the market...

As you can see, not all games are the same. Here's one purchased locally here in Maine, USA...a legitimate game put out by Ubi-Scoff. As you can see, the first pic shows the box that everything came in. It has the name, and graphic of the sub being depth-charged, yadda, yadda.
The second pic shows basically the same thing, but the second pic is the reference card.
The third pic again is a carbon copy of the previous two, except it's the in-box manual.
And last, but certainly not least, is the DVD that came with everything. Can anyone tell me what's different? Could it be that the burning in of the graphic on the DVD doesn't match the graphics on the rest of the materials? Can anyone see the 25-digit code to enter to verify it's legitimate, and therefore will load and run properly? Nowhere, on ANY piece of material in this game did I see a code. I had to get a hold of Ubi-Scoff and get the code from them.
This game was purchased about a year and 7 months ago.

I had a little bit more luck though, bough the budget edition of SH III in italy, it was published by the most important sports magazine over here (La gazzetta dello sport) and it didn't have starforce, patched up to 1.4 and had the printed manual completely translated in italian (no pdf manual) all for 9,99 euro.
So after 2 years I finally bough the game. :sunny:

That's a stolen copy of the game, why did you buy it? Now you will get virus.
