Friend or Foe?
During my current patrol off the Solomons, I recieved a radar contact, so I went to investigate. The contact(s) turned out to be a fishing boat, and a Junk. I know historicly, both types of vesseles were used by the Japanese to try to ship supplies and weapons, either by forceing the crews of the vesseles to cooperate, or by simply takeing them over.
It was always a tricky affair for the sub crews, as they had to board such vessels and determine if indeed these craft were being used by the Japanese, or if they were just ordinary "Joes" fishing for a liveing. In the game, as was probrably in real life, these craft sport no national flag.Since there is no way to board these for inspection (Possible mod perhaps?), do you just plug them for the heck of it and assume they were carrying weapons? |
While you've got them only on radar - do a coin toss!
When you've actually spotted (eyeballed) them, feel free to plug them if they show up red on your map. You may also consider plugging anything that shows up blue if you consider the game has given you WAY too much renown  |
I'm useing the RFB mod, which I believe removes the color coded ship icons for a more realistic experience. You need to actually get close enough to view the ship's flag to determine enemy or not. I wonder if the game just considers all Junks as enemy.

I don't recall ever seeing a Junk that wasn't an enemy. Somehow I doubt the game makes the distinction between civilian fishermen and gun runners. I could be wrong though.

the bullets you use are noth worth the recieved renown...unless...wait i'll look it up!

Well, if you're gonna let them see you then you should probably deal with them - if they're off enemy islands then I'll generally assume they're enemies. Also, if I see a radio antenna (like the one below), they're dead meat - if it turns out it was some poor native fisherman that just happened to be a ham radio enthusiast, then it's just his bad luck:
