Idea: Dynamic Desktop Wallpaper?
You know what just occurred to me? Why hasn't anyone at microsoft or apple invented "dynamic desktop wallpaper" yet? Like sorta a "living desktop background" which moved and seems alive... I can think of some cool desktops right now.
- a space view of the earth where the earth actually rotates real-time - dynamic clouds that moved and swirled just like RL, and even changed whether and stormed! Lightening optional - a ocean view with moving waves and swells. - grassly pasture where the sun slowly moved across the sky (dawn in RL = dawn on wallpaper, night in RL = night in wallpaper... etc.) - starry sky which occasion comets/meteors and moving constellations. All uber cool:yep:  Anyone know if anything like this is already available? |
Microsoft's Active Desktop technology does what I think you are asking, by allowing you to put HTML on your desktop in place of an image. I think it used a lot of resources and I never found anything interesting to use it for so I never bothered with it.

Actually, there is atleast one kinda dynamic wallpaper that I know of. It is a picture of a flattened world map where the night & day change in RL. Cant remember where I got it from, but it was quite neat. :yep:

An article on the subject.

There not that popular because of the drain on resources they have :nope:

Did you like The Matrix?
http://zmatrix.sourceforge.net/index.html Try it, love it. ;) Best desktop/screenie of this type I've seen yet, and I use it with a blank black background even today. |
Their are a few for winxp i use to run them, one that comes to mind was a 3d forest you move around inside it using your wsad keys, it gave that 3d effect, then their was the space one, that displays a realtime space battle.
Dont have them anymore cause im using Vista Ultimate edition:smug::roll: Quite a few around if you google, if i find the links i'll put them up. |
Your in luck providing you have Vista Ultimate. Dreamscene will only work with Ultimate edition. Download the Dreamscene of MS *still in build form* Vista DreamScene allows you to choose a video file as a Desktop Background. Once you have downloaded the DreamScene files, you configure the background just as you would for a picture, except you chose a .mpeg instead of a .jpeg. The result is an animated desktop.
Might get out the das boot dvd and have it as my animated desktop:) |
Ok i enable this dreamscene for anyone who's thinking of trying it out with Vista Ult, The DL give 5 of MS preview scenes, i have one of the waterfall running, looks nice, keeps the red light flicking tho for apprx the first 10min then it ceases im getting no slowdowns while browsing/multitasking etc., is normal. (running on 2gigs ram) many tutorials on how to make your own, from what ive read DreamMaker seems to be the tool to have (free) here:
