Yamato v. Bismark

:-? Just wondering,
In a one on one battle who do you think would win, taking into account crew experience and command strategy.

These 1 on 1 are always kind of silly...if the Yamato was accompanied by DDs or CAs with those long lances...bye bye Bismarck.

Sort of like Alien VS Predator.

if yamamoto was in command and hitler in command of his ship they would both stay in port afraid of fighting each other...

Not so. Hitler was an armchair general, at best. Yamamoto was a navy man all the way. As a young ensign he was wounded at the battle of Tsushima Straight in 1905. Given an opportunity to command a ship in combat, he would gladly have taken it.

Hmmm.. I guess I'll have to try making a own mission in SH4 mission editor.
This could be interesting!

I'm guessing Yamato...

But in real life? No idea ;)

Interesting page! Thanks for sharing that...

Apparently the Iowa would have smoked them both. :|\\

Bismark is really an overrated ship.

FIREWALL 05-02-07 11:13 AM

1. Command experience

2. Crew experience

3. Who got off the lucky first salvo :arrgh!:

You're comparing Yamamoto to Hitler as naval commanders? :rotfl:

Von Manteuffel 05-02-07 11:48 AM

No contest, really! The Yamato's main armament had a maximum range of around 45,000 yards, while Bismarks main guns could only reach 39,000. That difference in range of around 3.5 miles, would have meant that the Yamato could have stayed out of Bismark's reach while pumping out her 18-inch shells. Accuracy at maximum range would have been rubbish, but a few lucky hits would have done significant damage to the pride of the Kriegsmarine. It would simply have been a question of sailing out of Bismarks range until the Yamato either sank her, or ran out of shells.

The farthest hit ever achieved was by the HMS Warspite at a fleeing Itilian cruser in the Med at 25k yards. Hit simply do not occure at that range, and Bismark is a faster ship.

The only ships of WW2 that could withstand 18'' shell hits were the Yamato itself and the British Nelson type battleships.

Totally agree with the nub here. The Bismarck did what? Sink an underarmored battlecruiser? Any Iowa, Yamato, or South Dakota would stomp this ship. The Bismarck is basically an upgunned battlecruiser.....
