You know when you need to sleep when...

Coming out of the BB area, I had a report of a large convoy, 9 kts.
Despite being in very shallow waters, I set up an attack.

Long story short, I came up to p/d right in the middle of convoy at 90 angle, as planned.
Since the convoy speed was 9 kts, I set up a no-gyro shot with bearing 17. (The hydro-guru's can tell you what this means if you don't know).
There was a T2 passing by right in front of me at 250-300 meters, too close for torpedoes to arm. So I decided to wait for the tanker to pass by and then get a shot at a C3 in the next line.
In the meantime I decided to fire two impact torps at a C2 from the stern. This C2 was in the second line behind me. I fired with the aft tubes and waited for the tanker in front of me to pass by in the meantime.
Suddenly there was a HUGE explosion. It was tanker in front of me!
Completely surprised I dived and got out of there, wondering what could have happened.
Then I took a second look at the TDC.

Stupid me had forgotten to put the bearing needle to 180, so the stern torpedoes made a 180 degree turn and hit the tanker in front, and because they came from the stern, the range was enough for them to arm themselves.

Now stop laughing, I sank a tanker right?!

"The Canovaro maneuver" I like that :sunny: Don't try this at home!

woah - crazy! That's hype. Actually, I didn't realize that torps could turn 180 - I thought they were restricted to 90 degrees. Good to know that I can take some weirder shots.

What's that saying about making your own luck? :)

Heh nice work Its fun to use Gyro Angles to your advantage to get extra arming distance.

Very good tactic.

Now that's cool! :rotfl:

Must have been really crazy to see the tanker go up at point blank range. You know, those silent little moments before one fires another eel, mumbling a bit perhaps... then... BOOM!

Good one

Could the torps back then really have done that? :hmm:

Didn't see the torps go but they must have, there is no other explanation, plus the needle *was* pointing at 0 degrees. There were no friendlies around, and luftwaffe was out of range.
Didn't see if they both hit either, could have been a one hit kill. :D

I was too busy getting away and wondering what the ** had happened.
