Periscope tracking and CPU

Just thought I would post this in case it is of use to anyone else:

I just got a fast new machine and installed SH3/SH4. (QX6700 OC'd to 3.2GHz)

The game has been playing fine. However, I just stumbled on something useful. Periscope (mouse tracking) is proportional to the FPS/CPU. So, on my new system it is hard to move the scope smoothly and gradually (even with the CTRL key).

Having discovered this. I set up MoSlo (process/CPU slowdown utility) to reduce the CPU to SH3 to 20%. I can do this via a hot key toggle whenever using the scope. This takes my FPS down from 200-300 FPS to 30-50 FPS; making the scope much easier to use.

Seriously, I wasn't trying to boast and create CPU envy, but simply share something that might make targetting and scope scanning easier for those with newer systems. As far as I can tell, there are no mouse related configuration options available to the player.

A system is only fast for a fleeting moment, for as I write this the QX6800 is already available for purchase. That's about 10-15% more CPU cycles at the factory default clock rate than what I purchased.

One thing that is interesting about SH3 is that it appears to be multi-threaded more so than most games. (The Q series has four CPUs.) Most games will show spikes or a steady plateau on one processor in Task Manager. SH3 shows greater than 25% total utilization; more like 60-70% with spikes on all processors. (Of course, I did select the NVidia option which allows the 8800GTX driver to operate in multi-threaded mode independent of the way the application is coded. Perhaps, I am simply seeing the driver multi-threading.)

The Death Star is a battle station the size of a small moon; not only is it not a super computer, the sheer tidal force it would present should it ever reside on any desktop would no doubt wreck hovoc of such proportions that would make WWII seem like a pin *****.

It is obvious that he's using a Battlestar... Possibly Galactica... Or maybe a Cylon hybrid... Which would be a nice distraction during those long periods stuck in a metal tube filled with other sailors...

[edit]
Wow... the P word is censored? This is a forum about a game that puts you in the pants of Nazi Germany killing innocent cargo crews... And I cannot even write pin *bleep*? Fine... It would make WWII seem like a tetanus shot then.

ps. oh so tet-anus is fine but not the other end? Pfft...

Not really... Granted it's got a 100" plasma screen and occasionally tractor beam sexy princesses who don't wear underpants, you gotta remember that it went down after being shot once by some farmer kid...

It's not safe I tells ya! It's not safe!!!

LMAO
