Just had the "Drum" given to me!

OK so I just had the "Drum given to me (AGAIN!) as a promotion thingy...If you never had this, it means that you will retire with honors after 1-3 patrols. Is there still no fix for this ?

Camaero 04-23-07 01:35 PM

It's realistic and this is a sub simulation. I think you mean a break for it? Just giving you a hard time.

I wonder if you gave yourself less renown for sinking ships if that would at least delay this another patrol or two?

CaptainCox 04-23-07 01:49 PM

I was plain stupid as I this happened to me before, and I said yes to the "better" boat. Still, I know there is peeps around that would like to have "careers" like in SH3 (not historically correct) but it would be nice for the game play, at least as an option.

FIREWALL 04-23-07 02:02 PM

When you get new boat i got -750 renoun

CaptainCox 04-23-07 02:14 PM

Well, as I had a save before this I could decline the "boat" but I still think we should look in to prolonging the careers...(again not historically correct) but for the game play.

FAdmiral 04-23-07 02:41 PM

Maybe retiring after 3 patrols was the right thing to do in the real
world, but this is a computer sim game. In my book, the FUN factor
trumps the realistic factor. I think we should be given a choice here.
REAL or FUN !!!

It's been said before and I'll gladly say it again: when realism hurts the fun factor or vice versa, an option would be nice. Then everybody could be happy (at least on one account).

Captain Cox,
I'm in the same boat as you (bad and old pun intended). I just got the Drum right after reading this post. I decided to take it and enjoy a patrol or two with it. When they retire me I'll simply note the year and start my second career at that time. That will be my little workaround for the time being.

CaptainCox 04-24-07 12:32 AM

As for the historic accuracy regarding the "Drum" the game is well bugged!
Quote:

USS Drum was the first of the Gato class fleet submarines to be completed, and the only one in service at the start of World War II. Portsmouth Naval Shipyard laid her keel on September 11, 1940 and launched her on May 12, 1941. She was commissioned on November 1, 1941.
Drum made 13 patrols in the Pacific during World War II. She sank 15 ships, for a total of 80,580 tons, ranking her 20th for total ships sunk, and 8th for tonnage. After the war ended, Drum was decommissioned on February 16, 1946

I guess those 13 patrols was not with the same Skipper, but the boat was not taken out of action due to "the class of sub you have will be decomissoned" in 1942 like the game does.

@letterboy1, could you please post that date here...after you get retired of course.

letterboy1 04-24-07 01:30 AM

Sure Cpt Cox, I'll try to be sure and remember to post that date. I'm going to head out of Pearl tonight before I hit the bunk for some Z's . . . just wanna check out the new Sub with the modded skin (and some other mods I had lined up).

Yep, same here. I got it last night. I'll just start another career when done.

The USS Drum is now resting on land at Mobile, AL alongside the Battleship
Alabama. When I first saw her, she was in the water but the tail assembly
was being eatin away by rust so they had to drydock her...

Same here....I saw her when I was 13 in '76 and took the tour of her and the Alabama....CH
