Silent Hunter 4 1.2 Patch problems

I guess I'm just not having luck with SH4. Installed it on my desktop PC that is well above baseline spec with the latest software and graphics patches and the performance is poor - for example, during the training, the responsiveness is very sluggish to the point of being unusable.

So I installed it on my laptop, again well above baseline spec. Performance is somewhat better but when I go on deck, the submarine is invisible below me with the deck crew suspended in midair. Rebooting and reruning does hot fix this.

In both cases I'd look at your video drivers and update them if necessary. I'd also check what programs are running in the background behind SH4. Disable programs like virus scan and screen saver when playing the game.

Welcome:up:

List your specs if you can, this will help. Don't pay attention to the base-line specs ( yes this sucks ), look at the reccommended ones:yep:

I wish companies would publish real min specs. Specs at which the game will run with most of the eye candy turned off.

Nowadays, min specs mean "slide show mode".

It's misleading to a point. Either they know it's going to run like crap on the minimum system and choose to list the specs that low to sell more copies, or they don't actually test it at the minimum. I honestly can't see someone saying "Yep, works pretty well at this level".

This isn't a slam on Ubi - All companies, to an extent, do the same.

and then watch the really low amount of games purchased due to the high requirments of the game, Consequently killing any chance of a next version.

More detail

Thanks everyone for the replies. To be more specific, I have a 3 GHZ Hyhperthreaded desktop with 1 GB of ram and a 256MB nvidia graphics board with the latest drivers. The response is sluggish once in the game to the point of being unusable. I tried submitting a problem ticket to the SH4 website but it kept timing out.

The other one is a brand new 1.66 GHZ dual core laptop with 2GB of RAM that has a problem when I was on deck, the boat would not appear below the crew; although the preformance was better than the laptop, it is still not great.

No other apps were running in the background other than normal OS items so it's remarkable that these are not sufficient to run SH4. I even turned off my virus protection.

Hmmm. Something strange then. I have a P4 3.0 processor, 2 Gigs of RAM and a Geforce 7600GT video card and this game runs very well indeed on my system.
