[REQ] Torpedo Loading....%???????

One of the things I find annoying in SHIV.

Why cant my torpedo guys just tell me how long its going to take!

Yes Captain!...She's 30% in, just another 70% to go!
But how long is that in time chief?

Is this mod-able?...can we have an actual time to load?

I agree. We need an ETA like in SHIII

Have you looked at the Torpedo screen? It's interesting to see the animation of the Torpedo sliding into position. I think for now, that's the best gauge on time to load.

fullmetaledges 04-19-07 05:01 PM

on the torp screen it says a number out of 100 for example 73/100, whats wrong with that?

GSpector 04-19-07 06:13 PM

Hmm, 73/100 = 73%. Works for me too. :hmm:

Angus89 04-19-07 06:29 PM

% till loaded is okay, but I do agree a time like in SH3 would be nice.

fullmetaledges 04-19-07 06:36 PM

I would say a "guess" time would be better. Have you ever asked someone how long something would take and they say 10 minutes or 5 minutes, no one has ever told me a time like 2:17 exactly.

DiveMonkey 04-19-07 09:10 PM

I understand things can go wrong, presser under fire.

But this is a mechanical proses maned by even a half competent crew should take X time to load...faster for more competent crew

I mean,... even if the chiefs lies to me! I want a time to load :yep:

It's like if I plot my second intercept run on a convoy, when I come to scope depth I need to know tube 1 will be ready.
they had to know how long it took, had loading drills, I just cant see the % in it.

fullmetaledges 04-19-07 09:14 PM

watch how long it takes to get to 10% and then multiply by 10

DiveMonkey 04-19-07 09:35 PM

damned sloppy Americans :rotfl:

Just seems they'd had this down to a science...baring any unforscene :hmm:

fullmetaledges 04-19-07 09:40 PM

"sloppy" americans huh? I guess to be a captain you have to be able to do grade school math.

DiveMonkey 04-19-07 09:52 PM

Grade school math don't do a damned thing for crew efficiency, witch changes with experience or the boat I'm driving at the time

It was a simple request for a mod, nothing more.

Anyone have actual load times?

MadMike 04-20-07 07:03 AM

S-boat crews could reload all four tubes in 20-22 minutes (S-42, 11 May 42). If I'm not mistaken all six forward tubes for a fleet boat could be reloaded in an hour (damn, now I have to find the reference).

Yours, Mike

Thanks MadMike, I'm still learning about sub warfare, play with no external views everything set to realistic, but still have to us the auto target green dot thingy.

But the ultimate goal is realism. It just doesn't feel realistic to be given a % on when tube 1 is loaded, even if the time was wrong (it took longer, or not as long) I'd think the Skipper would have been told 0x:xx time to load.

Not something high on the list of things needed, but maybe some time down the road :)

Is it realistic to reload in action? Moving a ton and a half of torpedo in a cramped compartment using only muscle power and block and tackle is difficult, dangerous and unpredictable, not to mention noisy. I know that it wasn't common practise in the Royal Navy and I suspect other navies avoided doing so too. Imagine being on the wrong end of a depth charge attack with a torpedo slung from ropes or chains swinging about in the fore ends of your sub. Chances are you will get some serious casualties. Are you prepared to risk a near miss from a d/c while you have the rear door of a tube open? A wise skipper would break contact, and go deep to reload. Once all was secure again he could attempt to regain contact.

Having said that, I am sure there were times when skippers took calculated risks and reloaded in action, but not as a common practise.
