Vsync option

Just what is the vsync doing for me if I check it on the options page?

tedhealy 04-18-07 12:25 PM

Limits the framerate to your refresh rate.

SteamWake 04-18-07 12:25 PM

Helps with "shearing" if your not having any problems with it leave it unchecked (shrug).

AVGWarhawk 04-18-07 12:26 PM

And this does what as far as FPS or clarity of the picture?

Shearing? What does this look like?

Shearing? What does this look like?

Imagine a photograph ripped in half and put back together a little off.

Except the lines would connect like this smeared or warped.

Has no real effect on "frame rates".

uniquemind 04-18-07 12:31 PM

I think the guy means "tearing" which as you move the camera around would tear the image........hard to explain but easy to notice :)

SteamWake beat me to it

AVGWarhawk 04-18-07 12:35 PM

OK, cool. I did not have this issue with 1.1. I have the option checked in 1.2. I guess then I do not need this option checked as I do not have the tearing or ripped looking picture. Yes?

uniquemind 04-18-07 12:39 PM

No not if your picture is fine when looking around...............I've had tearing alot in other games and v-sync sorts it out :)

Scroll down to second screenshot of mine. This was with the 1.1 patch. Pic looks good to me. I guess I do not need this option. Thanks for the help men!

Glad you don't :D

One thing I noticed, and maybe it's just me, but after fixing this problem in the config file in 1.1 it went away. But in 1.2 I still have shearing even with vsync enabled in the graphics options. I double-checked in the config file and it's still selected there too. Very annoying.

Not quite as annoying as the audio crackling I have to fight through but there I can't decide how much is SH4's fault and how much is the Vista/Creative debacle messing up my day. At least turning off some graphic options, yes graphic options, cut down on it enough so SH4's playable.

Using V-sync can also eliminate or at least minimise potential problems where frame-rates can sometimes vary from 2fps to over 100fps, which can cause instability in certain configurations. With V-sync enabled, the disparity between lower and upper limits is minimised, resulting in less unforeseen lock-ups and crashes. The down-side is that it "caps" or limits your maximum frame-rate to either your current refresh-rate, or half that value.
