A Bunch of Stupid Noob Questions...

Ok. After playing this great game for a week I still have several questions.

F3 Map Screen:
1) How do you change the text for Map Mark Notes? I see on pg 60 that it says Map Notes: You can modify this name and attach a note. But it doesn't tell you how to do it.

2) How does the Compass Tool work. I click on it and it opens and closes. But even though the manual on pg 60 says draw ranges, I can't get it to draw anything on the map.

3) Also, on pg 60 it talks about Waypoints. Are these the same waypoints you set for your boat's course using that button in the Toolbar? I'm not sure which tool this is on the bottom/left corner of the map. I think I've tried them all, and none seem to act like that toolbar button and extend/add to my waypoints for my sub.

Orders:
1) When you send a Contact Report or Status Report, how do you know if it was sent? I don't see any message in any list that says it was sent. Do, I have to be surfaced? If I'm not surfaced can I send a report? I don't see anything on this Captains Panel in the manual.

Thanks for any help...

1. I dont know either.

2. Open the compass, select a tool and left click on the map and draw a line.

3. Waypoints are how you navigate the boat. Go to nav map and on one of the nav buttons is the waypoint tool. Hover you cursor over the icons and it will tell you what it does. With the waypoint button clicked just draw a line from your boat to a point on the map and left click if you want to set more waypoints or right click to set it as last waypoint.

You have to be surfaced to send a contact. If it warrants a reply it will take up to 24 hrs. to get. I hardly bother with the radio though.

3) Ok, I understand how to use the toolbar button on the bottom to set waypoints for my sub. But isn't one of the 'tools' on the 'desktop' also let you edit waypoints? Or is it just that Toolbar button?

No clue either shipmatey, Ubicrap packaged a woefully inadequate manual with the game. Sorry I cant help ya on this one.

The Compass tool you are clicking is not actually a Compass tool if that makes sense, it is the Tool Helper for SHIV (not sure if you are a SHIII player). The Dividers tool is actually the Compass tool, and is used to draw range rings around a single point. Clicking on the Compass tool changes the Ruler and Protractor tool mouse icons to usefull tools for guaging bearing etc.

3) Also, on pg 60 it talks about Waypoints. Are these the same waypoints you set for your boat's course using that button in the Toolbar? The Waypoints icon is not in the bottom left corner of the map, it is on the Nav Map toolbar which can be accessed at the bottom of every screen, it is the one that looks like a dotted line with an X at the end. To use it, click it and then mark waypoints on your nav map.

Far as I know, you have to be surfaced to send a report, but I have NEVER received a single response in the course of 3 War Patrols so, it's next to useless. You can receive messages up to Periscope Depth afaik. Contact reports are dodgy to send, I think as in SHIII you must be able to see every ship in a convoy in order to send a Contact report, Status reports are different though, you should be able to send them at any time. Just be sure you are running on the surface and your current watch are not bum tired.

Yes it's just the toolbar button. To edit waypoints already in place, click the Waypoints button on your toolbar, hover over any waypoint, the waypoint text will now turn red, and you simply click and drag the waypoint around. Be careful when deleting waypoints tho, since no matter which waypoint you have highlighted, the waypoints will start deleting from last to first, so you may end up setting all waypoints again. Just a tip.

EDIT:Bah! Gay forum icon time for me!

Under the clipboard clip, there is a drop down menu, with sent messages.yes, your Sub must be surfaced,or @ least decks awash,to send contact report.
Also,contacts must be red/ident.

Sorry, I just don't see any difference with using the tools if I open the Compass or not.

Thanks for the description, but I don't see the mouse cursor change except when I click on the other tools. And the mouse cursor changes with them even if I don't open the Compass, so it does not seem to show any difference that I can see on the screen.

I did play SHIII a long time ago. I do remember some measurement tool. But not sure what this Compass tool is supposed to do.

** The reason I also asked about a Tool for setting my sub's waypoints was that it seems that there is a tool on the desktop for drawing everything on the map 'except' for your sub's waypoints. For that, you have to click that toolbar button. When I have the Hud/UI hidden, I still have those tools available in the F3 Map view. It would be nice if there were a tool on the desktop so I could adjust my waypoints without showing the Hud/UI again.
