Do you keep your experienced officers?

I've noticed that in SH3 Commander, its saying about my Chief that I should consider "letting him go" to let him take command of his own Uboat.

Does anyone else ever dismiss these officers? Because I really don't want to let him go, I've had him since the start of the war, and we're about to sail for Patrol 6. He's a good man :)

Dismiss them only if they want to go, hahaha. Nah i rarely let any of my officers go. I only release officers when i think their ready to command a their own boats. It sorta sucks cause u can only promote them to LT senior, but in real life, the officers were usually promoted to a rank higher then LT Senior but lower then the Captain.

As i start going into the double digits of patrols i tend to release more officers so i can "train" newly commissioned ones so that they can command a boat of their own someday. Remember a person that is under someone else's command is just trainning to be incommand one day.

knowing personally what its like to be the number 2 or 3 guy up for a command promotion - i usually let them go after 4 to 6 patrols just for the sake of some sort of historical accuracy.

But either way, it really doesnt seem to make much difference to SH3.

hahaha You cant pull the carrot on a stick gag on your XO forever.

think of your officers as "captains in training."

Move your Weapons Officer up to the position of XO, and let your navigational officer take on the new and unique challenges of handeling weapons and assisting you with firing solutions and ship identification. Let your watch officer be your new navigator and recruite a green officer from the barracks to fill the gaps. When your chief is ready - repeat the cycle moving everyone up a number.

Once an officer has experienced the challenges of each officer position in the boat and when you express confidence in his readiness - only then can he be recommended for command of his own boat... and that recommendation can only come from you.

Its a proud day when you pull your XO aside and inform him of your decision to put him up for command of his own boat. (unit, aircraft, ship etc)

What if your XO doesn't want to go?

Good point.

MY U-boat, anyway, always seems to miraculously revert to a moment before any danger started just when it seems like all is lost and it's time to hope our wills were up-to-date. Must be aliens or something. UFOs, ya know. Time travel. X-Files.

Dunno what the deal is with the rest of the U-boats in the fleet, though. Man, their patrol orders must be 'decorate the bottom of the Atlantic' for all the success they are having.

Leaving my boat doesn't seem a good idea for your heath!

I never liked the crew management in SH3. Nor any of the mod models. I usually like that sort of stuff, micro management and the like. But just don't enjoy it this.

I think if it were set up so you could do 1 click and a second or third shift would relieve those on duty I'd love it. But the moving one guy at a time puts me off.

So long story short, all my crew are mine until we sink or the war ends. And none of them ever get tired.

YAY SH3Cmdr!

No... they can check out any time they want, but they can never leave :rotfl:

Randomly replace crew

I've always disliked the micromanagement aspect of Sh3 so I use SH3 Commander's "No Fatigue" option. Therefore, crew experience probably has little or no affect on my game.

But, in the quest for realism, I randomly dismiss a number of crew members after evey patrol ( 4 on a Type II, 5 on a Type VII, 6 on a Type IX plus any that SH3 Commander might release) and replace them with rookies.
