A question re porting sh3 ships to SH4

I note with interest a number of sh3 ships finding their way into SH4. I know people are working on a global mod to add the Atlantic theatre as an option so you can be US or German commander, this is all good.

My Question, will SH3 skins have the same detail, texture and lighting qualities / affects when transposed to SH4 as native SH4 ships?

If you look at a sh4 ship models the detail is far superior to SH3, the way SH4 ships are modeled in the environment, i.e. they actually reflect sunlight, wood looks like wood, metal looks like metal etc, the way the ship is lit and shaded is far superior to sh3.

Will SH3 originated ships, or completely new modeled ships have the same level of detail and react to the environment and lighting as native sh4 ships, or will we wind up with two sets of ships in SH4. One set being the fine new models of SH4 and the other the more primitive versions from SH3?

Bump !

That's a pretty good question. :hmm:

Until someone takes the time to "Do it right",
the SH3 ships will lack everything SH4 offers.
Try a few out and note there are no damages showing.
Not even a burn mark.
I've also seen waves disappear or not show at all.

Does it requires hex editing skills ? :nope: http://yelims.free.fr/Groumph/Triste08.gif

:yep:

Then just a minority of us is able to do it... :-?
I simply hope someone will find the time to do the job someday, when all ships from SH3 used in the pacific will be converted to SH4.

Part of the changes can be automated so I'm
sure that tool will appear sooner or later.
Then there is the need for additional graphics for each ship.
Not to mention the addition of a 3d damage model inserted
into the dat.

That's a lot to do.... Do we need to wait for the final patch by Ubi to see this work done ? :hmm:

Madox58 04-12-07 07:39 PM

Not as far as I'm concerned.
I see no problems with the dats.
It's the hard code that's so buggy.

Good luck, then ! :p :rotfl:
Sorry mate  I just know that you're one of the few skilled hex editors on here.... :arrgh!:

I made severel conversions

I have crossed over about 40 ships from Sh3 to SH4 ////

Merchant Power Pack and Ship Power Pack are my conversions as many others...;)

That are the exact words, crossed, not converted, you didn't convert the DM, added the new interior damage, normal textures, etc.

What Ref said!!!
Crossovers! NOT conversions!!
Simple tricks compared to the real work.
And I ain't talking anymore.

Which I doubt will work anyway, I suspect the game only recognises 2 sides plus all the porting over is meaningless as was said without chainging the DM etc.

The fact that they're crossovers and not conversions is probably a very good description. About the lighting, this can already be fixed by editing the texture alpha channels. Personally I think all SH4 ships need re-doing though. While the rough textures on the ships might look great, they don't look real. Ships are made from metal, not hewn from stone, with some feces slapped on for colour.
