[TEC] About Fanfara_01.wav (German music in US bases)

Deutschland, Deutschland Ueber Alles - strange to hear it in Surabaya submarine base, but there it was (no crowds of well-wishers - just the music) when I arrived in port yesterday morning. So apparently Fanfara_01.wav is still being used along with the sound of people shouting and clapping - all the old standard SH3 welcome noises.

Anyway, the point of this is to make modders aware of this in case anyone wants to mod it out of the game or replace the German music with more fitting music - Stars and Stripes forever - something like that maybe.

Anyway, I'm off to see if I can find all the ports that feature this little anachronism and to see if I can track down all the sound files that are being used. If anyone has any more info on this issue please post here.

The only trouble might be, of course, is sailing into Surabaya mid-war while it is under Japanese control, to be deceptively welcomed by one of those... :p (of course in SHIII, sailing into Lorient in 1939 would also be a profoundly German experience...)

...you might, of course, say that a hardcore skippe would never do that...

May I suggest just plain old removing it or, if nothing else, replacing it with something more neutral?

I also read somewhere that the US NAVY never had these big welcome parades for their boats.

I wasn't really thinking of a welcome. More just music playing. At Pearl Harbor one of the ships had a band playing just prior to the attack (at least according to the movie 'Tora Tora Tora'). It would be nice if we could model that and the Fanfara_01.wav sound would allow us to do things like that.

Anyway, I found out that Surabaya is the only port to feature the music. It's definitely the Fanfara file because I replaced it with Stars and Stripes Forever and that's what I heard playing.

If anyone wants to check it out it plays here:

I did change the fanfare.wav in my mod pack earlier, but never saw the band, so i took the file out to save on filesize/bandwidth.

If some one wants to go the whole yard with this ;)

Well, considering it's a Dutch port and the Germans invaded the Netherlands in 1940, odds are the band was thrown off the docks and then keelhauled a few times. Pretty crafty band that they still manage to play underwater.

Captain Cox, thanks for the Navy band website. That Whitehat March brought back many boot camp memories from 1959.

The fanfare music plays in Penang also. Dropped off an agent there, snuck around the harbor a bit and heard it playing.

All U.S. bases, forts and posts, and all ships big enough to have a band, always play the National Anthem (Star-Spangled Banner) at 0800 hours when the flag is raised; hence the scene in the movie.:yep:

I like the way the RN and USN have the same Navy Hymn
