Great app for simmers...
Most simmers know about the program End it All, used to free up resources, shut down service ect before playing a fps hog game, I found this one a while back and for me it's been even better, might help SH4 run better, it's called Smart Close, available here -
http://www.bm-productions.tk/ best of all it's free...:D |
Is it really safe to use this ? This version is from March 2005 !?

I rather use FS Autostart (freeware) as it lets you choose what programs and services you want to stop, defrags memory and restarts everything automatically on exit, without having to reboot.

I have trouble disabling my firewall and virusscanner. Even if I switch tme off the processes keep taking memory. I am using Norton Internet Security. Works perfect but I have no idea how to start up without automatically loading these. Any suggestions ?

As far as disabaling your fw & av try killing the processes with task manager. I've had a lot of experience with IS programs and IMO anything from symantec sucks magor dogmeat, just because it came pre-installed on your system dont mean you have to keep it...Nortons "does not" like to be shut down, good luck with that. I have zonealarm. Closing that with Enditall lasts 20-30 seconds, so I close it manually (the scanner tries to protect itself, that's why it lasts so long doing it via EIA).
I run AntiVir PE, this application protects itself so well against external manipulation that I also have to deactivate the guard manually. I wouldn't consider this to be annoyances, Drebbel, but as cool features that tell me that both tools work as intended and will not surrender too easily to manipulation from "outside"! ;) Oh, and I back Shad43 on what he said about Symantec. Next time you do a system reinstall, leave it out and replace it with something different. You can manage to get a good Firewall and AntiVir FOR FREE, and no futher license fees every full year. This AntiVir dominates the German market since years. By experience I can tell that it is absolutely reliable. http://www.free-av.de/ The best protection sits inside your head. Don't visit questionable sites. Don't have all and every activeX and Java switched on. Keep Explorer settings as tight as possible. then even a free Firewall like zonealarm is sufficient. Mybe I am paranoic, but I serve quite a lot - the reward is I have less than 2-3 alarms from system scanning per year - with IE and OE! They are better than their reputation - if not being used in a silly way (all open). I also use A-squared, Spybot S&D and Ad-aware once a week. |
One i use is "Whats Running" which is Free for personal use.

Good idea! Must try that.

I use EndItAll it may not be the best tool, but it does what I want and fixed my CTDs in SH3 and IL2.
Be sure to use msconfig to change your startup options as well. (Start->Run->msconfig->OK) |
Try using Bootvis to optimise startup. I use it when I install new programs, and its improved my startup times noticeably:
