Newbie here. Promoting crew question.

Hi all,
It's a pleasure to join the great Captains of the U-boat fleet here at sub-sim.
I have been playing SHIII for a little while now. LOVE IT! I got refered over here from the forum at GameSpot. See if some of you veteran Captains can answer my question. I have to this point completed 10 patrols. I return to my base at Willhelmshaven then exit. It takes me to barracks where I give out the medals and quals. However, I have a crewman ready for promotion and it wont let me promote him. It say's "you must complete a patrol". Huh? I've completed 10 and racked up 56,000 ton's of shipping! I added the ver 1.3 patch before starting. Any one know what's up? How am I supposed to "complete" a patrol? :damn:

Welcome Kaleun!!

When you return to port, are you pressing the 'Esc' key?? Are you either in port or within 25 KM? I get sent to an office and appear at a desk..

Good Hunting!!

I think its trying to tell you that you are trying to promote a crewman of
yours who himself has never been out.

Thanks all for the welcome. Yes, using esc key, exit patrol, dock at Willhelmshaven, then behind desk. I'm in the port facillity when i do this.

That's not it. I'ts my radio operator, been with me from the start. He now has 55 renown.

I'm thinking while they might have the experience to be promoted, that BdU hasn't actually given him any promotions to hand out yet because of his low tonnage (low by the game's demands, respectable for realism).

I've had plenty of guys who are full up on the experience bar, but since BdU hasn't given me any promotions for my crew I can't promote them (well, except that I use SH3 Commander for medals/promotions and don't touch the barracks in game except for enlisting new crewmen whenever I have losses via deaths or transfers).

Also promotions are like medals and such, you either use them when you're there or you lose them for when you get back from the next patrol.

If I am understanding his post, I do remember the in-game promotion msg he is getting and when first trying to work the in-game system being frustrated. The crewmemeber must be selected so that all the jazz for him shows in the window (lower right). Then you can drag the promotion over to the right spot.

I do most of that jazz now in SH3Commander.

In barracks he is highlighted in blue. ( my cursor is no where near him). I guess my question still remains, how do I get the system to recognize completed patrols so I can promote this guy?

Hmmmm, I'll give that a try and see what happens. I gotta get him promoted or his morale will start to suffer.

Do you have available promotions?

When you look at the tabs, you have Medals/Badges, Qualifications, and there should be another for Promotions. It'll read how many promotions you've earned. If that's at 0 then you can't do that in-game.

However, to aleviate any frustrations you might have in the future for promotions I'd recommend getting SH3 Commander.

You can turn off the rest of the jazz you don't want, but that program makes crew management a whole lot easier. Yes it is easy to abuse the system, so it does require some form of self-control, but I couldn't live without it now.

Just make sure you take heed of the warning and do a rollback before you install any mods or etc. A rollback will put your SHIII back to stock (or back to stock-GWX if you run that mod) and take all the SHIII Commander changes (except those you make to your crew) out.

In my opinion SH3C also adds to the realism in the fact they won't let you hand out medals before they were historically available (such as the U-boat War badge and such).

Exit the game then restart the Computer. Load the game then try it.

Thanks, That answers the promotion question. But why do I have guy's highlighted in blue? As well as it telling me I have to complete a patrol? Is that just a default untill promotions are avail? Maybe just a glitch. I'm not running any mods yet. Kinda wanted to get a handle on the stock ver first. I have looked over Commander and GWX Both look pretty darn cool. Any recomendations. Probably should post this in a new thread.
Thanks to all who gave me input. Glad there are those out there willing to take the time to help out a newbie.
