Can Anyone Tell Me If This Is To Light For A Moon less Night?
Can Anyone Tell Me If This Is To Light For A Moon less Night?
Clear sky , stars twinkling but there is no moon to be seen, I looked every where and there was no moon. Yet just look how the crew are lit up, is this the correct light for just stars and no moon.? http://i149.photobucket.com/albums/s...4-2007_0-2.jpg just in case you though the sun was coming up astern of us.. http://i149.photobucket.com/albums/s...4-2007_0-1.jpg Should it not be a lot darker with no moon ? |
Yes, it should. :)

Turn on the post effects and it will be really dark

I cannot tell if you've boosted the gamma in the options. Also, the lighting will stay pretty bright for 1 hour before sunup and 1 hour after sundown, then it will get darker quite quickly.

My theory is simple, during night time portions if you dont have to turn off the lights to play or hide under a blanket during the day, then your gamma is too high. You should have difficulty making out the horizon. Dark distant objects should blend in well with the dark sea and similar dark sky.
If the target between you and the moon you shoul dbe hoping to make out the silhouette against objects behind it that are softly illuminated, if you are between the target and moon, you'll be looking for those surfaces facing the moon that are softly illuminated. A full moon shoul dsoften the blackness of teh sky, allowing it to be more of a dark, ashy gray making it a bit easier to distinguish the horizon. As far as I can tell on my screen...its too bright for dead of night and no moon. |
I agree 100% with Nattydread. A moonless night should be dark, very very dark.

On pitch black nights it is literally pitch black. I was in a harbor that had a big light shining around and I still had to be within 100-200 feet of a docked ship just to make out the outline of it. That's with all effects on, I haven't tried with them off. I'm not complaining, it was kind of cool...

Same here. I play with all effects on and when its moonless or storming night is dark. My watch crew called out a ship sighting once when it was raining at night. Went topside and couldnt see anything. Map showed a fishing boat 300 feet off my starboard bow and the only way I could see it was from the muzzle flash from the deck gun.

It is realy dependent upon the weather conditions. If it is not cloudy or high humidity then you could be surprised just how much light the stars can shine, moon or no moon

On top of that, star-light may allow you to read a book right in fornt of you, but not enough light will reach your eye bouncing off from a distant object. Basically everything begins to approach the same drab, soft-edged blackness makinging it difficult to see where one object ends and another begins. Case in point, star-sightings are done at dusk and dawn where its still dark enough to see the stars, but just enough light to still make out the horizon. After that, everything blends together at infinity...unless your close enough to make out the little light that is bouncing off the object. I dont even like to play night sequences unless its reall night time. I have all the lights off and my face is right up to teh screen. Once i begin IDing and setting up for my shots, I turn off my TV first to make it even darker so i can make out every little thing. |

I've been enjoying gamma set to 55-60% on a Display with norm to cool bightness/temps... Also use a Red Night light from Sportys pilot shop facing down on the Keyboard, adds to the immersion and helps the eyes. Only thing is I wish the entire HUD/TDC was red illuminated or green too. It's hard searching the horizon with your nose to the screen and having that bright TDC glow in your eye's ( so I hit NUM+DEL ) to remove it until ready for a firing solution. :ping:

Looks good to me. My gamma was to low and I could see nothing at all. I attempted to keep it as dark as possible for some realism but not to dark where there is no enjoyment.

Gamma is on default , have not moved it! Tried the "post thing" worked but it hits my FR.

I have post on as well but sometimes moonless nights are brighter than nights when the moon is up. Just one of these things that make you go hmmm...
