GWX and Flooding
 

Hello,i am curious if this is normal.I got DCed by a Black Swan,a Hunt and a Dido.Hull integrity stayed ad 100% (i have modded the GWX so that it shows hull integrity),but i had flooding in 3-4 compartments.To my surprise,the boat would keep sinking no matter what were my orders and mind you the flood wasn't serious and got fixed in time.Only one compartment had visible water in the damage screen and not at high level.

Even if i gave order to surface,the boat would still dive.The only way to counter this was to repeatedly blow ballast,which allowed me to level at 169m,while also giving surface command continously.Now fortunately,i made it out of there at 99% hull integrity,both scopes and flak gun destroyed on a nice "red" conning tower.

My question is: Is this behaviour of the sub normal?I almost finished my compressed air trying to maintain depth by blowing ballast and damage wasn't even so serious! If i had some serious flooding ,i would have been dead meat(or sharkfood in my case).It just doesn't seem quite normal to me.

Is it normal for GWX?

I don't know if it is normal for GWX, but it sounds realistic.

Considering the volume of a submarine compartment, I would imagine that one with just a few feet of water would be of consideable weight. 3-4 compartments with 2 feet of water I think would be enough to sink a submarine unless it could pump the water out fast!

Yeah,i thought so.But i find it weird that i had to pump so much air out for a modest flooding.I remember in the stock game i have had much worse floods and still,the sub would comply to basic orders.

In this case,even if i leveled at 169,i had to still pump even more air in order to surface after the flood had stopped.THe "surface" command had no effect.

Anyway,it's interesting.I think i will be much more careful when attacking convoys from now on.The funny is even at 169m,the DCs kept falling close.And it's just 1939 yet. :huh:

Try going deeper just bellow 200m, they cant ping you and if your quiet you can get away fairly easily...a lot harder after '43 though!

Wow...you must have found the only decent crew in the Royal Navy. I haven't had any DC's fall even remotely near me in my 1941 campaign.

This is what would happen to a U-boat when it took on extra weight (water) :up: :arrgh!:

There is a stock bug which raises it's head now and again. You can take damage while on patrol and the hull integrity will always read 100% BUT when to return to base you will find that your hull integrity has actually dropped, usually quite a lot.;)

It's not usually permanant and clears after that patrol.:up:

Sharkfood, did you per chance had any other damage, like to the hydroplanes, batteries or electric engines? Without speed the boat will start start to sink even with relatively moderate flooding.

With any single compartment only partially flooded you will not be able to maintain a steady/constant depth at 2 knots :nope:

I will go if i have to.But i was scared that after i wouldn't be able to go up again! :lol: So when i managed to level at that depth i wasn't thinking about going deeper.I was just happy i wasn't sinking anymore.

I don't know. :D It was actually one of the crappiest convoys ever.It was full of small merchants and passenger/cargos.I hit about 5 of them and returned to base with only about 12000 tons sunk.I still had 4-5 torpedoes left ,but both scopes were destroyed and i didn't want to risk anymore by trying surface attacks using UZO.

Thanks,i didn't know that and i didn't bother to check the hull integrity after i returned to base.

No,the conning tower had severe damage (at the end scopes and flak were destroyed) and deck gun too.But apart the flooding,the rest was ok.

The speed was minimum because i was trying to avoid detection.So i think in GWX it's 2 knots and 1 knot when turning.Maybe that could have something to do with it...Hmmm. :88)

Now this makes sense...In stock SH3,the "ahead slow" is 3 knots.In GWX it's 2.I didn't think it would make so much difference.Thanks! :up:
