Upgrading my tricked up ride
It is July 1940 and I have discovered that once again I had been unwise.
I spent a lot of renown trickin out my VIIB. Engines, batteries, hydrophone, wetbar, jacuzzi, primo sound system 1400 renown (I got a good deal from fritz) But now I have enough renown to upgrade to the new 1940 model VIIC (the one with the white wall tyres) but my extra stuff does not transfer :( What ever shall I do? Is it reasonble to complete this war in a VIIB? Should I hold on to my classic VIIB until 1943 and get the VIIC/41? With the execption of the VIIC conning towers, can all the other upgrades fit in my VIIB? Or will I need to get the VIIC to get the cool toys? And no, I have no interest in the IX. Chicks dig the 7 nuff said So upgrade to the VIIC or keep the tricked out VIIB? Wadda think? |
Keep the VII-B. The VII B actually has a slightly greater underwater range and its speed submerged is slightly higher. Think about it like this... if you had gotten a real VII-B in the war and were sucessful with it, and the boat was still fit for sea... why would you need a VII-C? The only thing is... later in the war you can't get the AA firewpower with the VII-B that you can with the C.

If you are going well hang on to it until the VIIC/41 comes along.

i gotta admit i am a IXB fan but i do love the VIIB too, if i knew then what i know now i wouldve stayed with the VIIB
|
Im with mooncat on this one although im frequently seen on frankenboot
when I campaign I use VIIB then IXB and assuming we make it that far a XXI at the end just for the experience. MM |
Same here I'm still in my VIIB in '42 its quicker, and when your slow anyway that makes a difference, IIRC it dives slightly quicker too. The extra AA gun is pretty worthless anyway, because I don't really plan on taking on aircraft because if your shooting at planes in GWX you might aswell just abadon ship lol.

As I posted in my "lessons learned" thread, even in 1940 I learned the hard way about the risks of taking on a pair of fighter bombers (lost a good crewman  )
Thanks for all the advice. I think I will stay with my VIIB. Historically was it common for a Captain to stay with the same boat? |
Wait for an IX boat;)

What is the attraction with the IX?
See subject line
Because I play "mostly" realistically (80%) and I can't stand the unreasonable patrol zones given me (Western Africa from Willhelmshaven?) I always have limited fuel turned off. If I were good enough to play 100% realism I could see the extra range of the IX being attractive. But other than the increased range does not the size and the slower dive speed have more of a disadvantage? Probably not as I know many much more experienced captians than I love the IX. So to you smart guys, what do you like about the IX besides the increased range? |

Yes what he said. More torps:up: With 21 torps type IXB carries, 100k per patrol is easier to reach than type VII :D If on average you need two torps to sink a ship, all you have to do is find 10 large merchants, tankers or cargos and you get 100K+. I have two 100k+ patrols in my current career. With enough torps, it's not difficult. Having said all that I will try type VII the next time, and see if I can bag 100K patrol. |
