Ubisoft - Please make a surface naval combat sim using SH4 engine
I love submarines but I would love the ability to play with surface ships even more. Does anyone know if this is in the works?
|
I don't know what UBI has in mind for their next offering but if was me:
I would undertake a WW2 world-wide naval game based on the SH engine and let any ship or sub be player driven in either theatre, Atlantic or Pacific. With all the work on SH3 and SH4 already done, it shouldn't be that hard to do. JIM |
I know nothing about game engines , but looking at what they can do with the Crytek engine would a sim built on that not be better ?

If you play SH3 at all, check out Mush Martin's Uberboot or Uberstein as I call it. A modded Type IX U-Boat, specific for surface combat:yep: Not quite what you want, but fun if that is your thing. |

I''d be happy if they would simply produce a working sub game (I won't even mention the word simulation!)..,. r. |
Read the end of the manual and it talks about MultPlayer with other players playing the role of the surface Escorts; there are commands too. Have you seen this? It is claimed to be in the game already??

Oh yes.. I would love to see this.. Imagine something like the old Great Naval Battles series with the SH engine!
I was even thinking, as I was watching a ship sink and rest on the bottom of the ocean, that it has a good engine to make a wreck diving sim (although I doubt many people would be interested in such a thing!) Your campaign would be to locate WWII sunken wrecks and explore them. But as others have said, there's rather a lot to fix in our submarine sim yet. It would be a dream come true if SH4 could be fixed up and lots of details added to the campaign like all the surface battles, shore bombardments, more ship and aircraft models, accurate aircraft basing, real scripting of surface fleet movement.. the possibilties are very exciting! :) |
I'd definitely buy a warship sim, particularly a WW2 one! Surface ships interest me a lot more than subs, although I'm still enjoying SH4 (despite the bugs). The SH3/4 engine would be ideal for this, other than the interface and campaign structure, very little would have to be changed.

My impressions of this mode, from reading the manual, is that it's more like Fighting Steel than Destroyer Command, i.e you can command the ships but not actually control them directly. |
I would love a surface combat sim that allowed first person presence on the bridge, gun director etc
|
Anyone ever played Great Naval Battles of the North Atlantic? Fantastic surface battle simulator for DOS made by SSI. Graphics are old-school, but its still one of the most realistic damage models I've seen with its layered decks and compartments and flooding/listing simulation.
Playing that with the SH3/SH4 engine.... woohoo:rock: |
If I may be sarcastic:
Please UBI finish SH4 before even thinking of making any other sim, being naval surface or sub! |
Although I'd far rather play a surface sim than a sub sim, I agree 100% with JFL1!
I'm fairly confident that most of the serious bugs will be fixed eventually, though; the 1.1 patch already has more fixes and additions than many games ever receive (though this could be as much an indication of SH4's bugginess and incompleteness as the developers' willingness to fix + improve it) |
