Labour in shock as Lords kill off plans for super-casino

Labour's plans for a gambling free-for-all were in tatters after the House of Lords blocked Britain's first super-casino. Tessa Jowell was left humiliated when Tory, LibDem and rebel Labour peers united to defeat the Government in a knife- edge vote that wrecked the controversial policy.

Excuse me The House of Lords has no power so why is Labour in shock? They can ram this bill through the Commons.

So if we get them will they be a problem like alcohol is?

The house of Lords is not totally powerless.
If this kind of motion is turned down by either the house of Lords or Parliament then it can not go through at all. (no ramming!)
The only thing they can do it to try and change the wording and put it through again.

Things would have gone a lot smother for TB if the site selection for the casino had gone with out controversy.

I give 6-1 it gets built.:p

Don't care if they buld it or not if they do that's some work for some people for a while but once it's built won't see me in it I don't gamble.

It's a mug's game. The off shoot of legal gambling is more punters who loose the shirts off their back and then come begging for handouts. You also get criminals useing the place to launder money.

Once the government gets addicted to it, they won't stop. Here in Sydney Australia, most pubs have pokies installed. Larger clubs can have over 1000 pokies installed. Needless to say the governemnt rakes it in.

They stupidly put all the casinos together on the Bill; no considering each case. It was inevitable the Lords would reject it.

STEED 03-29-07 11:54 AM

The Lords can only reject it three times after that the Government can push it through the Commons. The only thing that I found bit of a  is the fact Labour controls the Lords.

Why do we need super cassino's any way?
