TDC History Question

On boats of the USN in the Pacific during this period, who was responsible for actually providing the data fed to the TDC? The capitain, the watch officer, the "weapons officer" (did USN boats have such a position?), some combination of the above? How did the data acquisition role(s) differ from surfaced to submerged? How many links in the command chain were there from data acquisition to data input?

Also, any recommended source readings for any of the infos above would be much appreciated!

:know::hmm:

cheers

There were at least 4 people involved in the process. The captain was usually on the scope and would call out "Bearing-MARK" and another crew member would read out the bearing from the ring at the top of the scope. Then the captain would adjust the stadimeter to get the range and call "Range-MARK" which that crew member would then read off the range from the scope. As those two thing were being read, one officer would be entering it into the TDC and another crew member would draw it out on plot.
