Manual Torpedo Aiming

So Ive been playing the sub school torpedo training mission a few times, playing around with manual targeting, I managed to hit the cruiser in the engine room or something because it just stopped dead in the water, so here was the perfect chance to see if you could blow up the ammo stores near the forward guns...

Only problem is I dont know how, I thought it would be just a case of not locking the cruiser and aiming manually over the guns, but that didnt work, the torp just went straight for the centre of the ship, I noticed the bottom wheel on the left hand side (shows your subs angle and which way the target is) wasnt moving when I was turning the periscope so, it was staying aimed at the centre of the cruiser.

So yeah, basicly I have no idea how to aim for something other then the centre of the ship im looking at/targeting.

help please :)

if your using auto targeting and it sound like you are you can change the spread angle left or right in the torpedo settings window and then see where it will hit in the attack map

Yup. There's another thread on this as well. Seems the scope isn't linked to the TDC, or at least we aren't using the controls correctly to make that input happen. You input AoB, speed and distance and you're done. You only miss the center of the ship through error in those inputs. I'm assuming as the poster stated above that this is what the "salvo" controls are for, but I haven't divined how to do that yet.

the salvo controls offsets your torpedo solution in degrees either left or right, if you want to hit 3 degrees to the right then change the dial to do so.

I take it then that that is historical? Because I know that when the Allies captured a U-boat that they were very impressed with the sophistication of the attck scope. I assume then that the American attack scope is a lesser cousin.

This is the problem that i have. I see nothing in the attack map :-(
Target is locked (playing easy mode)
but my attack map show this:

see that circle to the right of where it says posistion keeper, click it, that starts your tdc tracking

I don't want to create a whole new thread for this, so I'll stick it here.

Now that patch has somewhat fixed the imperial/metric fiasco, I was wondering if the dial for torpedo depth setting is in feet or meters?

Feet.

thx for you answer, but I think this will not help.

I mean the green line of the torpedo path (here is a picture of the training mission)
http://www.clouseau.org/pic/sh4.2.jpg

You can see the 4
torpedoes

In career mode there is no green line and I can't see the
torpedoes http://www.clouseau.org/pic/sh4.3.jpg

with "
Position Keeper" on it is the same

Wrong. You don't even have to lock the target in SHIV, just as you didn't have to in SHIII. The deal is that where your scope or TBT is looking at is being transmitted to the TDC the moment you enter any kind of data like speed, AOB or range (in RL they had an additional button for it, "Mark"). Then, when you move your scope or TBT around while the Position Keeper is active (red light on), your scope/TBT is "disconnected" and your gyro angles will not be influenced by that movement until you change or re-transmit any kind of data again (I suggest re-transmitting speed; iRL they pressed the "Mark" button). So, you can still aim with the crosshairs for ship sections as opposed to using the spread feature while the target is "locked" (which is in fact somewhat unrealistic, but can be convenient). It comes down to personal preference.

It is not a lesser cousin to the German scope but in fact has to work like that or the whole point of the position keeper would be mood. An analog computer btw superior to the German system, which was just an angle solver, as opposed to updating target position in real time no matter how you swing your own boat around. With that system, you can in fact go down-scope and know exactly where the target is at any given moment by looking up range and relative bearing on the TDC - provided of course the target hasn't changed speed or course.

Note however that for now the target relative bearing readout neccessary for that is bugged - not the functioning of the Position Keeper, just the readout.
