SH4 on WIn2000
Well I have just read the posted readme and it says that Win2k is not a supported OS. There are more and more games not working at all on win2k these days, but not supported and not working at all are 2 different things.
Has anyone tried Sh4 on a win2k machine yet to see if it works at all ? I am thinking it will Sh3 did, but they wont support any problems you have, which is fine with me... anyone know ? Thanks |
1999 called, they want their operating system back.
seriously its time to upgrade :) |
I am going to but I will be going strait to Vista in a few months or so, I skipped Xp because win2k did everything fine.
So really I just want to know if I can play the game in the meantime, and by waiting a few more months to get a good machine SH4 will only get better with the faster machine. So...does it work or does it get the Kernal32 error that some games are getting now (command and conqour)... Edit: I realize you cannot tell me killjoy :) |

Seriously time to upgrade... probably more than your OS Also you may want to carefuly consider using vista. Many hardware manufacturers do NOT have drivers available for that OS as of yet. |
I think my current pc would support vista ok, Its a dual core 2.8gig P4, 1 gig of ram ect...but Im going to buy a whole new machine and use this machine as a MCP/MCSE study box to install the server os's on.
But im not getting the new machine for a few months yet so...kinda hoping it works in the meantime. I think it will as long as the software is not *engineered* not to work on win2k. Its just microsofts way of forcing people to uppgrade from a OS that works perfectly well, the games that dont work on win2k are made not to, there is no actual reason for them not to work. Unfortunatly some game companies are hoping on the bandwagon and making the OS redundant for extra points with microsoft. |

There is a very good reason for them not to work its called FAT32 or NTFS or something like that. Basically file structure. |
It does run on win2k.
|
LOL win2k has fat32 and Ntfs...its exactly the same filestructure as XP and most likely Vista too...NT4.0 and even 3.51 had exactly the same file structure too hence NT FS (NT File Structure)
WINXP is Win2k with a different interface and a few upgraded features (dont let anyone tell you different), and nothing different in the games area that should stop them working, the games that dont work simply check the version of Kernal32.dll and fail if its the win2k version. As a support tech I can tell you there is very little difference between them cept the upgraded look and management consoles in different spots. Vista has more pronounced changes but I doubt it will be in the filestructure area, I think it will still use NTFS, if it aint broke...its already to military protection levels C4 or somthing and I cant see them changing it. But Im glad people will keep posting to tell me to upgrade, it will keep this thread current for a few days so I might get an answer from the other person in the SUBSIM comunity who is still running it :)...there must be one...at least one !! also I still get security updates for win2k from microsoft with the Automatic updates, its arguably more secure than XP due to the longer run in time. |
Thankyou Badhat17 :) I knew you would be there somewhere :)

Am running SHIV under Win2k SP4, no problems at all. Apart from the bugs that came with the game, that is.
And I certainly won't upgrade to WInXP or Vista as long as I can play good games under 2k. |
Unfortunatly Hannes I think that time is fast approaching...with games being written to not work on win2k you wont have much of a choice.
I Too wouldnt upgrade as Im happy with win2k but the choice is being made for us, we will have no option...More money for bill im afraid |
I tried all the Vista betas. I didn't see much there that was better than XP other than it being like a sad rip off of OSX. It runs slower, has many more annoying GUIs things (like needing to give permission to just change your desktop image). I see no reason to reach beyond XP at the moment, especially since backwards compatibility is still not even close to sufficient. No point in a 64 bit system that can't run anything.

Well my Processor is a P4 2.8 and there are 2 graphs under cpu usage...I thought that meant dual core as I only have one processor...
also for win2k users and perhaps winxp...even though you may be running directx9c make sure you run the directx instller that comes with the game. There are a few new files it installes even tho the version number hasnt changed and you may get a d3d_d32.dll file error (or somthing like that) when you try to run the game. So whats it called when you have 2 cpu graphs on a p4 ? I know its not quite standard... |

If you enable HT, you can fool Windows into thinking you have 2 CPU's or 2 cores on a single die. You can check for sure by your processor ID#. Go to the Intel website. They have a tool that gives you a bunch of info on the capabilities of your CPU. I think it's called "Intel Processor ID Utility". |
