Questions for anyone on dev team or beta team (merged)
The review disc that was shipped did not come with a manual, either hard copy or pdf form. I played the heck out of SH3, but want to be fair in this review, so I have a couple of questions for anyone with a legit copy of the game and a manual (beta team, dev, people from Sweden, etc.) until I can convince the project lead to send me a pdf manual.
1. Helming the porpoise, when I go to the sonar I can't see how to operate it. No obvious way to direct the listening in a certain direction, and no visual cues that I can see. Also, so far on my first career cruise I haven't picked up a single sound contact of any kind, even though I've come so close to a ship or convoy I can see them with the bare eye. 2. Radar - I added a radar to my sub before leaving port, and I get numerous radar contacts, but when I go to either of the two radar stations there is no way to turn them on. ?? 3. On the attack nav screen, on the pull down that has the zoom in and out tabd there is a third tab that says something, can't recall (not on that computer now) but it has a question mark in the pull down tab and it doesn't seem to do anything. 4. Crew management - not the same as SH3, but without the manual it's difficult to figure out how to have it handled automatically, how well it is working, how to manually move people to rest, etc. Quite a few other questions, but hopefully I'll get a manual from the team tomorrow - but any help from anyone here would be appreciated as I get back into the game tonight. Thanks - Jeff |

Heh.
There's only a rare few with a "legit" copy of the game right now jeff. They're in Northern climes. |

Just to clear my name :)
You guys are pretty suspicious - so just to clear my name, you can read a review of mine in the current Games for Windows (the new name of Games for Windows) and quite a few others on Gamespot, etc. I've been a writer covering sims for CGW, Computer Games Magazine, Gamespot, etc. since the really old days.
I've contacted Emil Gheorghe at Ubi, so hopefully he won't be so quick to cast aspersions. ;) |
I was wondering when the reviews from the internet gaming sites would start coming up.
I guess it is not a good sign for SH4 review when you write " to be fair". But then again even the pirates are reporting numerous bugs and the game has not even been released yet. |
For what it's worth:
I thought posting about a game that hasn't hit it's release date being asked about by someone using a full name on a message board was a little odd, even if a false one. Sorry for giving you sh*t, but I figured you might be one of those mentally retarded pirates. (Hopefully still giving you sh!t too!) ;) |
I'm actually reviewing this for a magazine, Computer Gaming World (now known as "Games for Windows" magazine.) Don't read anything into my comment on "to be fair" - I've just started playing it this weekend, and I'm a huge Silent Hunter fan (all the way back to Sid Meier's original SH!) Hopefully they dev leader will send me a pdf manual in the next couple of days (it's very odd to not get a pdf manual with the review disc) - I sent the project lead an email. I was just trying to get some time in with the game this weekend.
It is indeed a beautiful game, and so far feels like it has the potential to be a nice upgrade to the SH3 system. I just need to make sure that I am fair and don't knock it for something that I just don't thoroughly understand because I don't have the manual (I played the heck out of SH3 and just uninstalled it this weekend when I installed SH4, but there are some areas with some apparently significant differences.) Cheers - Jeff |
