Semi-OT A Submarine version of "Final Countdown"
For some reason I can't get this idea out of my head.
My dream for the next Sub sim would be the graphics and engine of SH4, But cover all submarines from the late 1930s to the late 1990s. I would love to run a "What if" scenario like a Los Angeles class SSN that gets warped back into the pacific during WWII. Imagine the looks on peoples' faces when you surfaced in that bad boy:up::up::up::up::up: Of course, there'd be no spare parts, no re-loads, but man what a serveilance platform. Aide to Admiral Nimitz: "Sir, you should take a look at this Super-ULTRA" Admiral Nimitz: "What is this?" Aide: "It is, sir, the location of the Japanese main battle fleet." Admiral Nimitz: "From what date and time?" Aide: "No, sir. You misunderstand. This is where the main battle fleet is *right* now. The USS Greenville has the Japanese fleet under constant serveilance." Admiral Nimitz: "Send this to Halsey and tell him 'Good Hunting.'" |

Personally, I don't know what you'd do with a modern sub back then. Well, besides sink ships; but still... Now, with a boomer you might nuke somebody in January '42. That'd get their attention real quick!:ping: |
Just give me Silent Hunter 5 as a DX10 Vista game back in the Atlantic in a U Boat. :D
|
Silent Hunter 5 should be 1939 - 1945, the whole world, U.S., German, British and Japanese subs.
|
Or have them link together like IL2 does...but have each version upgrade the graphics of the previous ones to the current level.
Only problem doing the nukesubs would be seeing your handiwork as you nuke a city or fleet. The event cam window is just too small to do it justice, and the missle may outrun the freeview camera. Mabe a post patrol view option so you can see the impact. Otherwise your going to have to get real close and use F12. I doubt it will happen since it would have to be a What if scenario...and alot of simmers would balk at that. Pity... |
I loved The Final Countdown. The soundtrack, the dogfight scene, the humor, it was awesome. I loved the look of the Japanese Zero pilots when they saw the F-14 Tomcats, or the survivors of the yacht when they were rescued by the helicopter:rotfl:.
"And naming this ship after Chester Nimitz, an active-duty admiral...":rotfl: But no, if we are to start yet another "what should SH5 be like"-thread (:o), lots of playable submarines is a no-no. It'd take an eternity to make campaigns, UI "skins", voice messages and sub interiors for several nations, especially if you plan on going large-scale time-wise, too, such as 1939-1990, or 1914-1945. That, or you'd have to crop it by giving each nation only one sub and generic interiors or something. Or, of course, it'd take many, many years to make and cost a fortune. I'm all for British submarines. It'd make for a welcome change, and they saw their share of action, did they not? |
I agree with you, Safe-Keeper. A game that allowed you to be a Captain of a German, British and American submarine is a non starter for all the reasons you state. Not only would it take a very long time to build and therefore be very expensive in terms of production costs, but the end result would be a 3 DVD game making it very expensive at retail. Ubisoft would also effectively be ending the Silent hunter series, because if they've given you all that in one game then there's nowhere to go in WWII sub sim terms after that.
I love the idea of being a British sub Captain though. That idea should be nurtured in my view. :D |
