Tips using Decoys

Never actually survived long enough to get a Decoy launcher, how do they work and when should I use them?

Will it fire oil and clothing out of the tubes in a cunning way to fool the Escorts?

Drop one (I sometimes use two) about 50m to 75m as you dive even deeper. Hopefully the DDs coming after you will hear the noise made by the decoy and let you melt away, twisting and turning in the depths.

They don't always fool the DDs. But when they work it's awesome. I attacked a heavily escorted convoy once and dropped two after firing all my torps. As I snuck away I came back up for a peek through my periscope. Six DDs were sitting in a circle around the decoys, taking turns dropping depth charges. Then they called in the planes and they pounded the sea water into froth.

So I have unlimited decoys then? or at least more than one :)

Thanks for the tip, will give it a go as soon as I can

The best way is with the in conjunction with the 90degree knuckle
turn order halfway through the turn drop one into it and go silent
as you continue turn and depth change better to leave the decoy
at something like 50 ft below Periscope depth but well above your
final depth

Decoys

Hi There,
Decoys used by U Boats did not make a noise. They were known to us as SBDs or submarine bubble decoys. A chemical reacted with seawater to produce a large cloud of tiny bubbles wheich remained static for a while.
It returned echos to the sonar which sometimes deceived the operators but a good one could usually distinguish it by the woolly sound of the echo and the fact that it was stationary.
Incidently, escorts used to tow a noisemaker called Foxer to decoy the acoustic torpedo developed by the Germans.
RR.
