Good places to patrol (big ships)

I've read previous threads that talk about good hunting grounds and so far I have a lot of luck finding ships quickly and in pretty good quantity. I've noticed though that almost all of the ships I run into are small and medium merchats. I havent seen a large merchant, pyro ship, etc. in ages. And I've never run into a good sized warship. So have I just been unlucky, is it too early in the war, or am I looking in the wrong place? Its 1940 in my current career and I usually stick around Ireland (AM 52 if I remember correctly, Im at work right now), and then break off to hunt convoys when they are reported. Is there a better place to find "big game" at this point in the war? Thanks gents :)

At this time I would say both entrances North and South of the Irish Sea (AM 52 and around and BF 15 and around) are probably your best bets.

I play around a lot in the BF15-13 area and sometimes see some tankers and C3's, but I've never seen a passenger liner  are they even IN stock SH3?

Be careful when engaging convoys in BF13 - as I recall it isn't all that deep.

That is the beauty of AM52 - lots of traffic coupled with deep water. You're right about little ships though - I've started a new career and I'm working my tush off but my total GRT isn't that high. Takes a lot of tramp steamers to equal one large merchant.

Don't think so... have a look at your reco book or museum and you will have the answer..

There's a nice passenger liner sitting in front of the Statue of Liberty in New York harbor, which is relatively easy to infiltrate.

Also one in Freetown.

Getting there in 1940 with a VII won't be easy...:D

Nope. But given the lad's obvious wisdom and intelligence, he is clearly aspiring to the world of bigger and better things, which means he will shortly be graduating to a IXB.

Met a lonely passenger liner in BF15. Going 21 knots. After a shell from the deckgun it went down to 7! easy target! BF15 is a good spot for anyone....

I may get myself an IX soon :) you never know. I know if I dont find bigger targets to shoot at the war will likely be over before I have enough renown though. Anyway I'll try BF15, thanks for the advice :) Seems like my last career I ran into pyro ammunition ships all the time, havent seen a single one this career. Guess I cant complain though, I have been finding enough to shoot at to get me around 30,000 tons per patrol so far at 100% realism, thats pretty good for me. If anyone else has grids I should check out let me know, tonight I'll try them out :) Thanks everyone

10 km from SE corner of AF79 in 1940. Wait for it and a task force with a carrier will come through. Lots of Swordfish in the air a few hours before and after it comes.

On the other hand, going all the way to NY or Freetown just to sink a passenger liner is an investment in fuel and time...:D

From mid 1940 to 1942 there is a stream of passanger liners that pass through BF 15 in the stock version of the game.
They pass through the north west courner at 21 knots. Do a sound check, when you find a target moveing fast, track it and set yourself acoss the track. another will be along shortly.

Managed to bag over 300,000 tons once before I ran out of ammo (AA guns included!). Needless to say the renown was impressive!!!

I'm in 1941 so I'll have to check that out the next time I play!!
