Update on computer problems and a renown question

Hi all. I played GWX for a couple hours last night crash free so I'm hoping everything is fine now. All I really did was clean out the computer case, especially the RAM slots and the video card. Maybe it was a heat issue? Anyway so far it looks like everything is back to normal.

So I noticed something on my patrol last night and I wanted to see if you all have had similar experiences. I attacked a convoy last night and overall it went very well, but I didnt get credit for any of the kills :damn: Sea was pretty calm, no storm or anything. I put two fish into a medium merchant and one each into two small merchants. I have the "realistic ship sinking time" enabled so it took maybe 20 minutes game time on the average for them to acutally go down. And sure enough, all three of them came up as grey icons when they sunk which usually means they were brought down by bad weather. At the end of the patrol, I didnt get a single ton of credit for them. This isnt the first time its happened, though it is the first time its happened in clear weather. Now dont get me wrong, I'm more interested in sinking ships than the renown, however it can still be frustrating because you have a great patrol and then come back to base and dont have enough renown to upgrade your ship or crew. Does anyone else have this problem? Anyone know of a solution or workaround? The only thing I can think of is to just annihilate every target with 3 or 4 torpedos to make sure they sink right away and I get credit, but that just seems like a waste.

Also I had an idea for a mod (I wish I had the skill to create mods myself!, you all rock!). I've been reading a lot about u-boats, including books like Iron Coffins. It seems to me that a captain would gain "renown" or popularity for damaging ships as well as sinking them. For instance often in these books I'll see a u-boats stats as say 5 ships sunk, 2 damaged. In SH3 damaging a ship and not being able to confirm the sinking means you may as well have not fired at them at all (at least when it comes to the stats). A mod that gives you partial renown for damaged ships would be cool, and from what I'm reading it would also be pretty realistic. Maybe 10% of the total renown after you hit the target, then the other 90% if it sinks. Just an idea though, thanks all!

No doubt a silly question but they were enemy ships rather than neutrals?

No such thing as a silly question  Yes they were definitly British ships, also the grey sinking icon suggests the ship was destroyed by bad weather, green means neutral and blue an ally. I've seen this problem before, I've gotten to where I'm hesitant to attack a convoy in bad weather because half the time I dont get credit for my kills the weather does. Its frustrating. Its almost like saying if someone shot me in the chest and I fell out the window they arent responsible for killing me, the fall was. These ships might be going down faster because of the weather, but believe me the huge holes my torpedoes put in their hull had something to do with it

Hmmm, that's a bummer m8!

Yeah kinda. The game is still incredibly fun whether I'm getting renown or not, hopefully though this will be fixed at some point, when playing on high realism tonnage can be hard to come by, when you actually sink a few you need the renown to better your ship.

Was it by any chance your first patrol in a new career ? and did you upgrade anything before you installed :hmm:

I've been getting some gray ship sunk icons, however, still got credit for the sinkings. --Strange :hmm:

You can also get grey icons when you are out of visual range but still in other sensor range
Or sometimes if you are real deep running away lol

Upgrading on a first patrol can lead to no renown
Also saving before ship has totally sunk can cause it

IIRC if you save before entering port and you dont get renown then loading from that last save can sometimes cure it

Thats IIRC
