Typ XVIII Walter boat
 
Hi everybody,

The Uberboat Mod just made me realise an idea. Is it possible to include an additional class of playable submarine into the game and make it work in the career? After all the Typ XXI wasn't a completely new development but was based on the Typ XVIII Walter boat. Unfortunately no unit was completed. But it had tremendous potential.

Even though the range was limited (3000 sm @ 17kn which should translate into at least 6000 sm @ 10 kn) it has the same offensive punch as the Typ XXI (23 torpedoes) and a significantly higher underwater speed (24 kn!) and endurance (202 sm @ 24 kn).
In reality the boats were converted to Typ XXI boats with normal Dieselelctric engines. Would be nice to be in command of this boat, even if it was just for a few months in 1945 :)

Hello Woof1701. I think I may be able to help you, however, I need more information on type XVIII. Moreover, I can't do texture nor model. I only do a little Hex editing and Cfg editing.:hmm: Anyway, It is really a good idea to include more boat into the SH3:sunny:

I found some interesting information.
The Walter boot use some special power to drive under water. The Walter Turbine. Normally, a boot use battery to drive under water, however, use oxygen and fuel to drive under water. The oxygen comes from hydrogen peroxide. Thus, the Walter boot can actually 'run' at 24 kts submerged and have a good range.
Unforturnately, in SH3's system, it may not be possible to use the normal fuel underwater and remove the battery system. I can only change the battery into 'Walter battery' and the electrical engine into 24kts.

Woof, if you are happy with this, it is easy to use the XXI model and change XXI into XVIII.

Great. That's almost exactly what I was looking for. Since the Typ XVIII and Typ XXI looked virtually identical, editing the visual model will not be necessary anyway.
The technicalities of using a real Walter turbine is not really important. Having a boat that has a surface speed of a Typ XXI with the vastly superior submerged speed of the Walter Turbine would be ideal. Since the Walter turbine didn't require the snorkel, your idea with the "Walter battery" would be exactly what I had in mind. The XVIII still had a snorkel though and could also run on Diesel alone. It had to do that since the hydrogen peroxide was - like diesel - a fuel and was limited.

Can this additional boat be integrated into the game or does it have to be a substitute for another boat?

You know the premise was that ubers engines were taken out of type XVIII
but due to hydrodynamic drag of typeIX hull only 12 knots submerged for uber


Type XVIII // 1485/1652 tonnes 6 x 21" torps speed 18.5/24
hull numbers U796 & U797 both begun in 1943 but not
completed.

I haven't tried this before. But I believe besides cloning, may be it needs some cfg editing or gui cloning. Indeed, i am not very familiar with the SH3 system:hmm:. Anyway, I will have a try, but definitely need some help.:arrgh!:

its beyond my capacity to change the model itself the best I can do
is simulate in the configs as with Uber.

I was aware of that. That's what gave me the idea. The Uberboot Mod is a little too much for my taste :) Seems to be a mixture of Typ XI and Typ XVIII with battleship armor :)

Getting the cfg would be very nice. Just have to figure out now how to include that into the campaign and we can use SH3Commander to switch the XXI and XVIII folder

With Uber what I did is this

I didnt make a seperate model I chose one and changed it.
no cloning. just advised everybody of what sub to choose
in menu and made sure it was available at campaign start.

so when you choose Uber on your list it isnt listed as such
its listed as Type IXB 1939 however when you pull it up
it shows on F7 screen as Porsche type IX-XI

Youve got to remember Im not really a modder
only been at it two months and no comp training
so my solutions are crude and simple.

as for the cfg's all i did was mod my game the way i needed and
made copy of the cfgs that I needed when all was set and just
put them into the jsgme package in the altered state.

that way when you put it in. your armour guns and speed etc
all change and when you take it out your back to your normal
campaign.
(yeah right......Dats all der is mon der aint no goin back!LOL)

Sorry woof. I am now busy with Uberboot mod, trying to help Mush Martin for hex editing.:damn: May be I can help you two weeks later, first try to change XXI into XVIII, then try to make the new boot.:arrgh!:
Anyway, i have the basic concept to the XVIII, and i have a plan to modify. XVIII is coming soon!:sunny:
