Model of Tropic Pacific Water ?

From what I've recently read, the clarity of the warm tropical water is such that a submarine had to be deeper than 80 feet...to not be seen from the air. You 'can' see really deep in those waters.

Sailing out of Subic Bay in 1970, from the signal bridge of our destroyer we could see the rocks and plant life on the bottom. I'm not sure of the exact depth, but the biggest carriers used that channel so it had to be pretty deep. We also had fun watching the dolphins swim under our keel.

Yup...I know. And Capt. Ruhe stated that Doctrine for the Boats out of Brisbane was to dive below 80, when aircraft were spotted...visually or on radar.

accounts as I recall indicated that the pilots could regularily see down
to fifty or so feet but under good conditions 70 plus feet

Must have been a bugger to have fought in the Pacific. I would've much rather been on the beach with a cold drink, rather than storming it with a rifle in hand.

From what I read, 'escort' depth charging was less of a threat than the Jap Boats hunting the Yank Boats...Even aerial 'water bombing' wasn't much of a treat.

isn't it the same as the med? i was on a rigid raider and could see down 20 - 30 ft.

Ya Got Me... I am, in fact, a Surface Sailor... and only know the little I *do* know about Subs from current reading and more than a few beers with Sub Chiefs... in the past.
