Just great.

Which reminds me of a sea story

We were in dry dock for a week to repair the stern planes in San Francisco at Mare Island Naval shipyard back in December 1963 ... I was only 19 years old and way too young to drink so I stayed pretty much to the tourist scene, know what I mean?

But the rest of my crew on the USS Salmon SS-573 (last of the diesel boats) went ashore to visit the Horse and Cow a renown submarine bar in San Francisco.

One of the crewman was getting friendly with a girl at the bar and two other crewman, who had been there previously knew that she wasn't a she, if you know what I mean?

So the sailor, torpedoman I think, (sorry Frank) slides down to talk to his two shipmates, while his new girly friend goes to the head, see. These two had cooked up this story to tell their buddy how great she was, you know how friendly she had been to both of them the last time they had been at the Horse and Cow, right?

Of course with the knowledge they pocessed they had out and out lied to their friend and shipmate. She comes back from the head and says, "Are you ready to go"?

He winks at his two friends and takes off with her ... everyone in the bar knew and they had a good laugh on there friend, figuring that he would reach the same conclusion that they had, sooner or later and be back to chew them out for not telling him.

Hours go by and they finally give up and come back to the boat. Next morning at quarters everyone is hearing the rumor of what happened, before muster on the deck topside. Finally the COB hears about it and has roll call with the offended sailor getting topside late.

After roll call and before the COB let us all go ... He turns to the sailor that the joke had been pulled on and says these words, "Sailor, it's okay to play around, but sooner or later those that play gotta pay"

The COB was an A-OK guy gunnersmate chief from WWII, but later someone explained to the sailor what had happen and he wouldn't believe it (no details here of course) but all of a sudden he believed and he starts spitting in the bilge and we all laughed ... end of story.

The Medic is by far the worst picture after the Wild Night in Bangkok, though the Navy Dude isn't far behind. I agree, however, that it is definitely a right of passage on this board.

I'm having one right now.

Edit: well I was :P
