took a field trip today to the field museum in Chicago, very interesting. Tight quarters on the sub, i don't think I would have lasted very long on one of those subs. Imagine the smell!!! Anyway for those of you who play this game as much as I do I highly recommend going there and seeing the exhibit.

Just think - U-505 is a Type IX sub, roomy compared to a Type VII, and palatial compared to a Type II.

CCIP 02-22-07 07:50 PM

Actually the Type IX is no roomier inside than a Type VII - its size doesn't really mean it's any 'roomier'; that extra space is not 'comfort zones' but larger engines, batteries, torpedo tubes and other combat-related stuff - and fuel tanks of course. There's barely a few more bunks on it for the slightly-larger crew, even.

The IX might seem like a cow, but for a sub its size there's been no concessions to performance designed into it compared to the VII. Though it did ultimately have a different role, it was still built around the same aggressive U-boat design philosophy - performance over everything else.

I would love to see the 505 in person. There is a virtual tour of the 505 that was posted not too long ago. Also many good books about the 505.

It's one of only two u-boats left to see. The other is a type VII on dispaly somewhere in Germany (IIRC).

If you want to see some good pix of the U995 check this topic

I would love to see thiat. It's definitely on my list of things to do before I die. Of course we've all heard the stories and descriptions of how cramped it is in a U-boat.

I'm going to the Cavalla tomorrow to help load torpedos and will be taking plenty of pictures. Yeah, its a U.S. sub but maybe it'll give me somewhat of an idea of how constrictive a submarine can be. Don't worry, I'll post them all!
