Hedgehogs.
I had started a career in the Med 1944 so maybe I could make at least one career thru the war. Anyway about a day out of my base I ran into an enemy convoy with very large ships, I just couldn’t resist.
Had great position when the DD’ started coming out for me, sink one, then two of them just stopped in front of me about 4000m, dead ahead. After sinking the first I had started to dive but since these boys were stopping I decided to go to periscope depth and see if I could take them out. My soundman must have zeroed in on them and nothing else. I was hearing strange sounds and used my external view and saw a circle of the hedgehogs hitting the water around me in perfect circle. My boat didn’t get touched at all, cool. I was still rising almost to periscope depth and thought I would be right behind the ship that just tried to kill me. But I forgot that they throw those things out in front, but again I was lucky as he just missed my bridge by inches. I got off one fish when another hedgehog thrower came at me, this time I wasn’t so lucky. Cool sight these things coming at you, but I did notice that a couple were going off when they were not hitting me. I thought they exploded on contact.
