whats the point of renown?
why is this included in the game would real uboats only get certain upgrades if they had good patrols? Or is it to make the player of the game be agressive and go to the correct patrol zones and not go joy riding? also is there anyway to turn it off cause i would like all the upgrades as they come along since i need all the help i can get

there is a way to get more renown
you have to edit a file wich i dont remember where is:damn: |
Be more aggressive!

This is why I like the "no renown" system of NYGM mod...
Instead of costing "renown", it takes time in port to install the stuff or commission a new boat. |

Well, here's "a" argument for renown which ive concocted on my own from the far recceses of that underused grey matter betwixed my ears.
Renown, is simply fame. Or, positive reputation. In the real world, (im about to apply a big paint brush here, brace yourselves), supplies available to militaries are often limited. Either not enough is being produced, the shipments went somewhere else, or maybe they just got blown up somewhere. But the point being, supplies and equipment are not unlimited. Now supplies, are usually inventoried, watched over, and ultimatly issued out by people placed in charge of supplies. The short of this is, if your a supply sargeant, and you only have say,... 2 snorkels left in your inventory, are you going to pass them out freely? Or would you perhaps hold onto one of them for a buddy who happends to be skipper of some uboat? Or simply put in other terms: *supply sgt gets on phone* "hey Herbert ya its me, Karl, hey man, you owe me big on this one! You know those snorkels you were scrounging for? well i managed to save one for you but you better get down here and pick it up quick, cause i wont be able to hold onto it forever" |
I like the thought behind the Renown but I dont like that you could lose your Rank when you use Renown to get upgrades. To me the Rank is more important then the Renown. Ranking should be based on Tonnage and the Upgrades based on Renown.

I don't mind the game play behind renown....it's okay, imo.
|
I dislike having to "buy" boats and upgrades with renown. It's way too "console" for my liking.
I do think it is an appropriate way to track your rank and awards though. I have edited the files so that all upgrades and new u-boats cost zero renown. This way I can have the best of both worlds.:|\\ ________ LORENAL LIVE |

Ducimus: Yeppers, that's how I see it too. As well as your CO looking at you and scowling, "Vat? You vant the new turbocharged engines? You haven't sunk more than 2,000 tonnes a patrol yet! If I vere to approve anyone's request to the yard dogs, it vould be KAPITÄNLEUTNANT Valter Heller: he brings home at least 30,000 tonnes a patrol!"

In the save directory in My Documents find the latest save point for your current career, then find (IIRC) the last Patrol**.cfg. Towards the bottom of this cfg there is an entry for DELTA RENOWN. Put any figure you like.;) *Quick blast from Inhaler - Much better* Carry on, nothing to see here. |
No no melnibonian, anyone on The True Dark Side knows of the Patrol_0.cfg. The simple way to right the wrongs of renown. But I would NEVER do anything like that .
But in all seriousness, I've decided to take it as it comes in my current career. I'm currently on my 4th patrol in Jan 40'--decided to try doing the whole war for a change. I already have over 8000 renown and still nothing to spend it on--so I just get promoted and medals. Though, starting a career from the beginning makes me think that the Devs possibly designed the renown system to function when starting a career in '39 and progressing from there. If you don't do that, the renown system becomes rediculous. In 44', you should get 10,000 renown for making it to your patrol gird and back to port in one piece. Edit: ok, maybe not 10,000 renown, but more that 500. Anyway, just my thoughts... Cheers, J |
